wrighthere
I have a 98 VW Passat and have recently just started having problems with the air con. When i start the engine the dispaly shows every digit and flashes. After a couple of mins it returs to normal. This is where the other problem happens in that the air blower stops and starts and when it does works it makes a realy awful noise. Any ideas anyone? I thought it could be an electrical problem! meriafel
Have seen complete new Valeo units on ebay recently by sellers such as amtex, blingcrosby, 4ringspares and others so take a look. I have no experience of these sellers and in no way do I endorse them but the vast majority of sellers in the UK I have found to be very good. wrighthere
Would that cause the display problems though?
meriafel
In short I don't know! Was replying to Sparky2076's comment and that you said your fan made an awful noise. My son has my '98 TDi Passat which developed an air-con fault last year. Had it checked out with VW who regassed unit adding dye after gas was found to be leaking. All leaked out but with no dye showing. Dealer regassed again adding more dye. Still no sign of leak. Pump was checked but no faults shown. Said leak could therefore only be behind dash in the condenser which is a mega item to replace and costly to buy but dealer unable to give guarantee that this would sort problem! Currently air-con switched off and have obtained s/h condenser which I need to check for leaks. Intend to make plate, fitted with a bike tyre valve/gasket, to fit over inlet/outlet of s/h Condenser! Pressurize with pump and check for pressure drop next day. (Need to find working pressure, any ideas?). If condenser holds pressure will do same to the original condenser in car.(the connection is visible near pollen filter.) If the original is then found to be leaking will replace with the s/h condenser. This is a DIY attempt at a fix but can't afford to let dealer play around any further at my cost. We have already spent £200. Does anyone have any ideas as to where possible leakage places are on this system? Know there is a connector beneath battery. VW have really tried but failed. They have used the ultra violet lamp? to check for the leaking dye but no leaks are visible. Frustrating! Let me know how you get on with your problem. Seem to think our display went haywire too. Car not here at present but will find out and post shortly.

Passeta07
Just a quickie and a stupid one too! How do you get the aircon to work on these climatronic systems?
Rustynuts
The aircon is working all the time, unless it says "ECON" on the right hand side of the display. Also, there are 2 seperate settings on the unit. First is the normal day to day use which you set to whatever you want (personal settings apply), and second is the "demist" function. Press the demist button so that the display shows the demist icon, and then put aircon on, select a nice warm temperature, and a high fan speed. Then press the demist button again to take you back into the day to day settings and set that as you want it. Then, whenever you need to demist, just press the button and it does it. Press again to go back to day to day settings but do not make the mistake (my wife does this) of pissing about with all the buttons again to try to get it to blow into her face. Really fecks me off, that does.
Evobaz
Could be the blower motor brushes. £15 on ebay. I had a similar problem on my 2000 Passat Tdi, fitted a set of these and it now works perfectly. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...O:IT&ih=
