Starting Issue

Hi, I have a 1995 A8D2 4.2 Quattro, with 160k, recently serviced.

I have an increasing problem with starting the car. The car will always fire after 1-2 spins of the starter, but then die instantly. This can happen 3 or 4 times before the car will start and idle normally.

There is no further issue when the car is running. It happens when the car is hot and cold, and sometime the problem can go away for a couple of days before returning?

It was doing this before the car was serviced, and has gradually gotten worse.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, have you got or know someone that has VAG-COM, if you do i would suggest hooking it up to see if "any" faults have been recorded, that then might lead you in the right direction...

of the top of my head, it sounds more like a fuel problem than anything else, but i could be wrong,

Has the fuel filter ever been changed ??

I dont know if the fuel filter has been changed, but I would have thought that this would give rough running as well as poor starting if the filter was an issue? Its always worth replacing!

Yes you may be right, as i said it was just of the top of my head..

Another idea is, when you switch on your ignition, the fuel pump is primed ready to deliver the fuel at the flick of the start switch, I would assume thats controlled by a relay.. "maybe" that is a little sticky sometimes, hence it works fine after a few goes..

i cant be more specific, as not actually being there etc or had the problem myself, its hard to diagnose it. it could numerous things really, but im just looking at the "obvious" things i would check to start with..

EDIT:- just another thought, it is possible it is the Key / immobiliser problem, I have just been doing some digging around and it seems those "may" be the symptoms of the key not talking properly to the immobiliser, hence it cuts the engine...

Have you got another Key ?? if so try that for a few days and see if the problem persists..

Your sencond diagnosis is highly likely but its not a case of the key talking to the immobi. but more of a case that a small black wire is getting snagged and/or needs cleaning with elecy contact cleaner, I'll try and find the link.

BTW welcome to TSN the pair of you 169144-ok.gif

Thanks very much all for the advise!

I'll try my other key for a while to see if the problem persists, and if so, take the wheel off and have a look at the column immoboliser wires.

PS - Yes, thats Mike's A8 photoshopped into my colour with my Mandrus Emil wheels I'm picking up soon. (His has Work Eurolines on)

I've already got all of the same airbag suspension setup as Mike, just waiting to fit it!

is that a boot lid from america ive been toying with the idea of changing mine i have a 5 digit p/plate that will fit nice and snug in there,i like the idea of a square plate rather than the standard issue.

Its a pic of an American car, guy I know called Mike Kippen in Washington State.

From what I've seen, there are acutally three different plastic numberplate recesses available. 1st in the standard European sized one, to fit in wide cutouts in the bootlid and take a Euro sized plate. The second is a narrow US surround, which fits in the narrower but deeper cutout in the bootlid. The third is a crossover, it fits into a European bootlid cutout, but the recess for the plate is narrower to take a US style number plate.

See the pics for example...

I really want one of the US-zixe plate surrounds to fit my Euro sized hole! Been scouring EvilBayUS for ages!

Just like to say, that in my opinion the "euro" size plate looks far better in shape and contour and fits the design of the car much nicer,

it just fits nicer and matches the contour with the rear lights.....The "US" style plate....for me, just dont look right!!

Just my opinion

No never got round to it, was about to stick 'em on fleabay when the weather gave me a chance to take some higher resolution pics.

I just noticed are you running A4/A6 rims?

[/ QUOTE ]

Rims were available at the time i bought the car, i just had to change the originals as it was fitted with the "plate" style oem rims, and they is just pooooo..

The rims fitted are exactly same size as the originals tho, 8x17 and have the high polished edge /rim and look nice imo..

But i do like the quattro sport rims that you had..and the S8 standard rims, but boy o boy they fetch high money, if you can find em

How much are you looking for them ??

Hi, do you mean the actual plate surround, or the large plastic piece that fits into the boot itself?

if you mean just the number plate itself,
