Found a new rattle

The Mk V seems to have numerous rattles, but I've searched the forum and can't find any posts regarding this rattle. I assumed the noise was coming from the back seats so I put some tape on the metal clasps that secure the seats upright. Didn't fix it. I then checked all the trim in the rear, while there is some movement in some of the trim I don't think it would make the noise I'm hearing. So next I thought it must be coming from the tailgate. I gave it a few hits with my hand and could hear something rattle. I drove a few hundred yards with the tailgate up and heard nothing, closed the tailgate, turned around and drove back at the same speed and the rattle had returned. I reckon it's got to be something in the tailgate rattling, any ideas on what it could be?

Cheers.

Hi HepP1 -

You are not alone !! I've got an ED30 with the same problem. When I drive along uneven roads, there is a rattle coming from the back seats (or so I thought). I thought it could be the leather rubbing. It's a pain because it sometimes stops and then rattles again. I must admit I haven't really had a good stab at fixing it. Another guess was that it was a loose spring in one of the back seats. I must admit, I didn't even think about it being the tailgate. I'm going to take a look at it this w/e. I'll let you know how I get on sportifs2.gif

Jack, wantmygti, are you sure thats not just the little rubber balls on the end of the parcel shelf cords banging against the side of the boot? I've noticed this on mine, but it was far worse on my old A3 - I ended up tying a knot in them, to shorten the length, so as they couldn't reach the sidewalls of the boot!

My GTI is 4 months old and I've always had a rattle from the back that drives me mad. It happens pretty much all the time, and definitely sound like something is 'loose' as opposed to plastic thats merely close but rubbing together (dunno how better to explain that)

VW have had it for last 3 days, did a few things but it's still the same (road tested with technician who hears it too!) - what they think now is that it's perhaps a faulty seatbelt so are ordering me up a new one. Could make sense, if it's something in the mechanism. I've checked a few things and used felt tape etc. already to try and find it. Hope they fix it so will see

Jack - could your noise be the strings on the parcel shelf with the rubber balls, they hang a few inches down when the lid is closed so as not to keep it in tension... Over speed bumps they flap around and bang off the shelf/boot etc.

I've found over the years that rattles are just something you often have to live with frown.gif Dealers are usually poor at finding and curing them, and more often than not you'll get the car back with some other problem that wasn't there before it went in.

I have experienced each of these over the past 2 years with my GTI. The 'bump' in the boot is the plastic balls on the end of the string attached to the boot. They make hell of a noise at times. The other, more illusive, rattle is the front edge is either:

- the front edge of the parcel shelf rubbing on the rear of the back seats (remove parcel shelf to check)

- the rear head rests too low and chafing where they touch the seats (remove of lift up to check)

- the side of the double split section of the rear seats rubbing against the single section (place a rag in the gap between the two split sections to check)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi - first time on here, as I've only just found this forum! Been ploughing through some really helpful discussions on here.

(I recently changed my six yr old Polo GTI for a used MkV Golf GTI. It was a bit over budget, but I decided to go for it anyway. And I'm so glad that I did!)

Anyway, on topic, I've also noticed a rattle that seems to have got worse over the past couple of weeks. Also coming from the rear left hand side, and sounding like something is loose rather than a rubbing sound.

I've tried out a few things, but I have narrowed it down, I think, to the fold-down part of the rear left hand seat (the smaller one). I'm wondering if there is something loose inside it, as the rattle doesnt seem to occur if I drive with that seat in the down position.

Has anyone else with a similar rattle managed to narrow it down to something specific. I'd prefer to know pretty much what the problem is before I go back to the dealers, and it would be really helpful to know if others have identified the same problem.

Cheers

Dealer had my car again last week and replaced the seatbelt at left rear, then said that they can still hear the rattle and would like it in again next week to have another look. I'm now 99.999999 percent convinced it's the latches on the seat back (and now seen quite a few threads about it). Only happens when the seat back is in the normal position and nobody sitting on it (which made it harder to localise)

I wrapped some tape round the 'U' lock that the latch goes onto, problem with that is that when you push the seat back it cuts through the tape and it's metal on metal again. What I did then is cut up a bit of cloth, place it over the edge of the 'U' weld and slammed the seat back onto it. Now haven't heard the rattle once, and it used to be continual.

Other threads I've read refer to using sticky backed velcro - which I may try

Happy days again :-) hope the dealer can come up with a permanent fix next week.

I too have found that the tape can be cut through as you push the seat back. Sometimes the rattle has reoccurred a few weeks afterwards so I've had to reapply the tape. I'm still experimenting to find something that will last permanently - the sticky backed vecro sounds like a possibility...
