TomTom Plus services

Recommended Posts

I did use the trial traffic and it was pretty good. Then I bought the TMC and its pants. Theres a new one coming out in Q2 so hopefully I'll exchange mine for one.

I've no buddies in TomTom but I can see it would be useful on something like a long fast car drive. sekret.gif

You get a months free trial for traffic or safety cameras when you first connect up. Just had to buy a TomTom One at the end of last week and have just gone through the same pain.

Traffic seems to work quite well. It might even be a bit better than the TMC service in the Audi. You certainly get lots more detail.

Would I pay the £20-£30 a year for a subscription? Probably. If I was doing any kind of mileage at least.

If you want a copy of the latest "safety camera" databases drop me a PM with your email address and I'll email a copy over to you sekret.gif

I have Pocketgpsworld cameras. Updated them last night - before that it was 14 June before leaving for Le Mans grin.gif

Apart from the fact that I have no idea how much data costs on my own mobile, it seems great. I quite like the idea of auto updates - does anyone know if the speed camera data from tomtom is better than pocketgps? I suspect its the same database, no?

Scotty, pm me your buddy email - I want to test this smile.gif

Buddies will fecking rock on the race to Le Mans. Err, I mean rally ECLIPSe.gif

I'm pretty sure it's nowhere near as good as the PocketGPS database. It has a much smaller number of cameras included and reading some of the PocketGPS forums, the positioning is not very accurate. Think it might not include the laser sites either.

Agree about the automation though, the Home app and the mobile connectivity work really well.

Definitely check the mobile data costs closely, especially if you're using it on the continent. Too many horror stories about massive data bills for the un-wary.

How massive is massive? yelrotflmao.gif My phone is on a plan that favours evenings etc and rapes you during the day. I really only use it for the billion vodafone and uk landline evening minutes I get - hence not using it for data.

I'll be driving to Spain next week. Am I going to be bankrupt? wink.gif

Roaming data charges can be a real rip-off. Lots of stories about people coming back from business trips/holidays owing hundreds in mobile data charges. Check your tariff carefully.

The TomTom stuff isn't massively data heavy but you probably wan't to check the implications of downloading upto 1mb a day to be safe. To some extent it depends on how often you set Traffic to update, I think mine is every 10 minutes from memory and it seems to download 350kb per day (in the UK). Also make sure you download any of the French and/or Spanish camera db's through the Home application via your broadband connection.

Not sure about the implications of the buddy functionality. I guess that's probably lightweight as I suspect it'll just be transferring co-ordinates.

All cheap in the UK but once you start roaming they cane you, if you're not carefull. 169144-ok.gif
