megawc
Hey All, Considering buying the Panasonic Viera TH42PX70 and wondered if anybody could comment on how good they are. I can get it on price match from John Lewis for £899. Is it worth it or would my money be better spent on something else? If so, what would you suggest. Looking for 42" plasma. Many thanks, Conor
Daz
It was reported in this thread by our resident expert, gIzzE, as being an "Awesome set" [ QUOTE ] The PX70 is an awesome set!! I went to pic one up on Monday for the conseratory and was actually very disapointed, poor blacks, washed out colours and very soft. But my mates arrived yesterday and his was fantastic, in fact the best all in one flat panel I have ever seen. Very impressive. So make if you get a screen that you don't think looks quite right you send it straight back as there may be some bad apples out there. megawc
Cheers Daz That helps me make up my mind. As JL sell it without the stand - just need to source a pedestal now.....
drpellypo
Indeed - the panny is an awesome set, and for the money, you simply can't get better imo.
Paul
Im planning to buy the same and hopefully get a JL price match. They sell the pedestal seperatly for £99 IIRC.
megawc
Paul, You are right that JL are offering the pedestal for £99. However they are showing as out of stock at the momemt. JL at Brent Cross have told me that they should have them in shortly and I can order now. Peterborough store offered me the price match with no questions. £899 if I collect, £948 if delivered. TheEdge
Hi all Went into John Lewis today and asked for another view on this set and i was far more impressed this time. For a start i asked the assistant to take the picture mode of DYNAMIC (well too bright) and the picture looked more solid and not over blown. For the price this set is amazing im still not sure if the set has an s video socket on the JL website it says it has one the Panasonics site says it doesnt?? Any of you running any HD material yet DVD etc?
gizze
I think it can do S-Video over scart 2?? Looks awesome with HD material. Also JL Trafford Centre are now doing this screen for £899, so get your local branch to price match this. You can buy a wall bracket of ebay for £30 or buy the pedastal stand for £99. megawc
Gizze, Do you know is the set up the same for the PX70 as for other Panny screens that you have posted instructions for? Mine arrives on Monday - can't wait!!!!!
gizze
They are all the same on the Pannys, well pretty much. Cinema mode will give you a 2.2 gamma. WARM will give you an almost perfect colur temperature. So make sure you swicth them first. Now turn off all the enhancements, make sure they are all set to NO. Then put a menu up with white in it, and lots of text, Sky banner is perfect, if not the freeview tuner menu. We use graphics as we know that white in graphics is really white, graphics that are shown on a channel may not be pure white. If you have dvd with the THX set up test patterns on it use the white squares and drop the contrast so you can see all 6, if not use the banner or menu. Now set the white level (contrast) by getting it as low as possible and still keeping text looking white, you don't want it to start looking dull, on a PX70 this is around 45% normally. Now up the sharpness as high as it will go before you start seeing noise round the text, usually see a ghosting to the right first, at this point knock it back so that disappears. Now set the black level. Put a film up with black bars and stand next to teh screen, look at the black bars and up the brightness so you can see noise in them, dithering or green lit pixels is what you usually see first, knock it back so it is noise free and solid, this is as black as it will go, go any lower and you will start to crush detail. Now you want to adjust the colour, out of the box it is far too hot, put up a nice studio shot and adjust it looking at skin tones, we all know what someones face should look like, so make sure it looks natural, I usually have mine around 40-45% at the very most. This is actually too much saturation still, if you plug a calibrated profesional camera into the screen and point it out of the window, and lower the colour so what you see on screen matches what is outside you will have it around 30-35%, but colour adds to the image and we tend to prefer a more colourful image than a true image, it is TV after all. So set it around 40-45% and enjoy. Do it all in that order too, and once you have adjusted the colour go back and redo contrast and then check brightness again, they all affect each other. megawc
Thanks Guy. It arrives on Monday so I'll set it up as you have explained and let you know how I get on. Many thanks for your help Conor
copster
Well I have succumbed to temptation and bought one of these from JL managed to PM to £899 with 5 year warranty so dead happy with the deal Over on AV forums I read about 'running in' my screen - is this necessary? I will be using the settings as advised early in the thread otherwise.......
Daz
Does anyone know when a Panny 42" 1080P plasma will be available?

megawc
TV was delivered this morning - all looked fine until I got it out of the box and they had deleivered a 37" one . Straight on the phone to JL and it is being swapped over by Central Service on Friday who they use for their installs. They told me to go ahead and use the 37" one - that is an expensive error if they end up selling it second hand.

megawc
Had me laughing Guy...... However - you have hit my biggest concern right on the head. She is out of the country at the moment and it was all supposed to be set up for when she comes back on Thurs night. I know for a fact she will come back and say 37" is very big and make a comment about not needing the 42". I have had a play with the settings as you described Guy, but I can't find white or black settings. Am I missing something. I assume the set up is the same as the 42". I have set it to Cinema and warm, and I have played with the colour, contrast and brightness, but as I say no white or black settings. Also, on the THX set up, I can see all the 8 white sqaures no matter how high or low I go on the contrast. Am I doing something wrong? Cheers, Conor
