robin09
Has anyone had a problem with their Mk4 R32 not starting? Drove into the car park, came back anout 5 minutes later and it wouldnt start. All the electrics are working, but the starter motor just clicks when you try and turn the engine. Anyone had a starter motor problem? Mook
It'll be the solenoid, rather than the starter. Give it a tap (not hard). The solenoid will be sticking. Easy enough to fix, by removing it and re-greasing it. That'll be your weekend occupied then...
robin09
I bloody hope it is Mook, cos VW say they have no starter motors available in the UK! Cheers for your help, I'll report back. (eventually)

Rachel
[ QUOTE ] All the electrics are working, but the starter motor just clicks when you try and turn the engine. [/ QUOTE ] Exactly the symptoms mine displayed when a cell collapsed in the battery... Hope you sorted it!
macdaddyR32
like wise when i had the 1.8t , thats why i ask. They only last a certain length of time. any good motor factor will test it for you.
BrakeSnake
My old S3 had a prob with not starting that only ever happened once. It was really strange, the starter motor just didn't turn, yet bat, lights etc where all ok. Jumped the car directly by bypassing the bat and solenoid and it was fine ever since. mb
It is probably the battery - there is enough juice to throw the solenoid (hence the clicking) but not enough to turn over the motor (hence the non-starting)
robin09
In the end it was the wire running from the battery to the starter that had rubbed and frayed, probably due to the engine moving a bit. All sorted now, cheers for all the advice!
Mattchaps
Glad to hear its all sorted mate
Mook
If the engine's been moving, the first thing to look at changing is the rear transaxle mount, a.k.a. the dog-bone mount. Either replace with the standard one or get one from www.neuspeed.com or www.eiptuning.com Just don't go for the VF Engineering solid side engine mounts. Teeth. Rattle. Out...
