SneakyMcC Posted April 6, 2007 Report Share Posted April 6, 2007 Our 8 is making a rubbing/groaning noise going over bumps/wiggling steering wheel side to side around the straight ahead position/on and off the throttle at low speed. The wierd thing is, it only seems to do it when the fuel is low? The 8 has just passed an MOT... Can anyone help? Edit: Its coming from high centre/left side of the bulkhead. SneakyMcC Posted April 6, 2007 Author Report Share Posted April 6, 2007 I've had a listen from outside whilst the wife drove. Its a creaking coming from somewhere the otherside of the front wheel. I've had the pads out and splashed a bit of copper grease about, as the creak goes as the brakes start to bite. I'm not sure that this is the trouble tho? NickGUK Posted April 6, 2007 Report Share Posted April 6, 2007 Just to clarify, does it sound like a squeaky old pram ?? if it does, then its the ball joints on the lower suspension arms, very common problem and easy to change. When i did my first ones on my first 8, i bought em from dealer.. BIIIG!!! mistake, they are readliy available now from motor factors and even ebay . Bexley Audi changed both lowere arms. Would they have put the old ball joints back in? Edit: Would it be 1 whole part? Botang-Man, you bought a complete set of the HD linkages. That bottom piccy in your post is a complete set of arms for both sides, what i suggested was just the middle-lower 2 in your piccy, they are the COMMON ones to go, but it depends on your pocket tbh, if you have enough dosh and want to do a super job, then change the whole lot..but i am 98% sure that its the 2 i suggested, if it was my car thats the 2 i would do first. Upto you. NOTE!!!. (fanx NikG ). Now, if I strip the linkages down, will I: a). Need a wheel alignment? b). Should I be able to tell which joint? c). Do I need any special tools? NikG I know you're pointing the finger at that ball joint. If it is, I dont where I stand with Audi UK. I surpose, I have to strip it either way really... NickGUK Posted April 7, 2007 Report Share Posted April 7, 2007 Hi, a) Wheel alignment....In theory NO, but depends how fussy you are, i would change em and check it still runs true on straight road. But remember what i said earlier, DO NOT torque them up till the weight of the car is back on itself / suspension in normal position. Obviously this is hard if the car is on the ground and not on jacks, so what i would suggest, is change em with the car on axle stands, tighten the bolts "enough", then lower the car off the stands and then drive it onto ramps so the suspension is in the correct geometry, then you will have room to get back underneath and Torque them up. If you have a pit or you know someone who does, then even better b) Yes, if it is the ball joint it will be all loose and have some movment in it, ie wobble within itself. You will see how bad it is if you compare to a new one. c) Nope, just some muscles and general sockets, extensions etc and a Torque wrench for re-torqueing after its done. With regards to how you stand with Audi, well tbh it would only be garunteed for a year anyway + its just general wear and tear. From my experience, the S8 and anyone who puts bigger wheels and lower profile tyres "generally" suffer more as the control arms take more abuse etc There is some guys at Audiworld who have changed 2 sets in the life of their cars. If it is 2 years, well we are past that anyway...if you get the dealer involved and done under "warranty" all well and good, if not just grab some from ebay and slap em in...If ya lived local i would stick the kettle on and join in the fun. NickGUK Posted April 8, 2007 Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 No i doubt it will, but here they are anyway According to the Manual, all nuts should be replaced when removed, well imo they are nylock-nuts, if you still feel a resistance when doing them back up, then i would re-use them. Its up to you really, if you want to you could visit the stealer and get replacement nuts before you start...thats if they have em in stock offcourse.. A good tip is, if your "planning" to do it...then a few days upto you actually doing it, spray all the bolts etc with a dis-assembly lube, or WD40 so it has time to sink in and will drastically help the stiff / corroded nuts and may save a few knuckles to Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

After going through a few sets of the Audi supplied ones I ditched them for a complete set of the Meyle Heavy Duty Arms which have been much better IMO than that Audi ones. They are starting to show signs of wear but when I was breaking the other ones in a few weeks its a lot better.
