fresco1
Have been back in Dublin for a couple of weeks, naturally I shunned Ryanair and other low-budget airlines and took the GTI instead! Nothing too exciting to report (as usual, stuffed GTI with family and hammered across England and Wales), didn't even get lost thanks to new Alpine Sat Nav and DVD kept the kids quiet. Anyhow. As others may know, parking up your GTI in Dublin can be a bit of a gamble. It was left for a couple of hours in Dundrum Shopping Centre with no bother, but unfortunately Mrs. Fresco needed to go to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre (something to do with a certain retail outlet having her size (8, before anyone asks!) there an no-where else). Parked up in the multi-storey near M&S. Only car on the floor. So no fear of parking dings. Except ... (sigh) .... upon return I thought something was odd with the car. Oh yeah, that's it! Where's the ******* driver's door rubbing strip gone? And the aerial - I'm sure it had one an hour earlier. And those nice metal valve-covers were on both sides before, not just the passengers side! Fairly tragic, but all replaceable (and since replaced). But the point is - WHY?!!!! Couldn't believe it wasn't keyed! Small mercies! Calm Chris
Paddy pikey kids, nearly as bad as pikey kids . As you say, cheer the fact that there's no major issues. Don't forget the car park may have had CCTV, write to them with an incident report- they might get a result. No good for you, but good for any Dublin based GTi's that park there in the future

Tarmac_Terrorist
Come to the conclusion that you can't own anything nice car wise anymore without expecting to have issues like this. Exactly what is anyone going to do with one door rubbing strip??...glue it on a Nova? I take it there was no cctv?
fresco1
[ QUOTE ] Don't forget the car park may have had CCTV, write to them with an incident report- they might get a result. [/ QUOTE ] I did think about it that night, but after a lengthy family debate (and fairly unpleasant obsecenties from me about B/Town generally) we decided as no metal was damaged and everything could be snapped back on, that we would (a) put this down to a B/Town pikey 'tax', and (b) never set foot in the place again! What I'm more concerned about is that my sis is getting a RR Sport, and I have no idea how the hell she's going to keep it pristine with that sort of nonsense going on. Mind you, she did break the news to me that GTI's were regularly spotted in Dublin on halting sites (Easy for someone waiting on delivery of a RR to say, obviously!) I had to think of some part of Asia that I could compare Blanchardstown with to aid her knowledge, but failed! If you can think of a place, I'll gladly inform her! jd6677
Fresco - sorry to hear what happened to the GTi. I have to say I have never had any problem with parking the GTi in B/Town , but in saying that I don't think I have ever parked the car in any of those car parks for longer than 10 mins Although I have had the all the value caps stolen two separate times There has been a few GTi's stolen lately along with a lot of other fast motors. Theft of these seems to be on the increase. JD
JoeGTI
yeah, Blanchardstown has a bad rep, my sister lives near it, and I wasn't too comfortable parking there when I last visted! How the hell did they get the rubbing strip off? Are these glued on? I'm amazed they did it without damaging the door itself. Fecking little scummers. fresco1
Judging by the amount of adhesive left behind, it must have been stuck on as well as secured on its clips. I managed to get this done via contacts over in Motor Imports the next day, so thankfully the bad look of the door was quickly sorted. I have a suspicion - nothing concrete - that as it was about 10am and mine was the only car on the floor, that it was actually some guys I'd seen who were fixing lights (legit) in the car-park. No-one else would have realised that I'd parked so high up in an otherwise empty car-park. My sis lives in Saggart, she was telling me that some car-theft ring was leaving stolen motors in Citywest Hotel's car-park as luxury / high-value cars are all over the place up there. They'd leave them for a couple of weeks to see if anyone would come near them, if not, the tea-leaves would take it away. Except one arm of the ring got caught. Other interesting story I heard was from a friend in the trade in Dublin (BMW). Seems some little s**t in a main agent was alerting his scum mates as to where trackers were installed in some cars. His mates would nick it, park up somewhere very fast and rip the tracker out, one would then get a taxi into Dublin hiding the tracker under the back seat of the taxi! Seems the police would then surround some taxi driver who hadn't a clue what was going on, meanwhile the exotic tracker-less motor was stripped pronto back to a shell, whacked into a container surround by scrap metal (i.e. anyone looking in would not obviously spot the car) and shipped off to strange countires and re-assembed! I don't know if this is really true, but my source seemed to think it was genuine!
JoeGTI
I've heard similar stories... also apparently prevalent in the south-east area (Wexford, Rosslare...) - i.e. places that are close to ferry ports! Fortunately (touch wood), I live in the West, so the thieves would have a long drive to any ferries from my place
