DHA
Friends car in carpark. There is a squealing type noise when the engine is running. 9 year old polo. Bonnet opened and it sounds like it is coming from one of the belts, possibly the upmost one in the engine bay. Safe to drive or not? Ta
Dadstoys
Yes. Sounds like the fanbelt, the one that goes round the alternator, easy adjustment to get rid of the noise.

DHA
Good work! He has called the AA as we have no tools nor mechanical knowledge. It was also making a bit of a grinding noise after a few minutes.....
Dadstoys
That doesn't sound too good. Good be knackered water pump or alternator bearings. Either would cause some squealing noises.
Botang
My best guess, tensioner pulley on the cambelt failing, could throw the cambelt off at anytime. In which case not safe to have running let alone driving.
DHA
It was the timing chain that was out. I think. AA towed.
