theduisbergkid
In Germany for a couple of days this week, usual Hertz rental deal, expecting a focus or the usual dull stuff. Guy hands me an unfamiliar set of keys, mooch out to the carpark, and its a .... Well, a 118 diesel to be exact. So, expecting it to be complete cr*p based on what I have read, and I hate the BMW image BTW, I was not expecting much... Big mistake, went pretty well, 6 speed, had all the extras, handling and ride we're much better than I expected, and it did 220 kph easy on the Autobahn. By the time I took it back, I was even starting to like the look of it (in met black). Only downside was the useless I-Drive (I took my tomtom, which is loads better). So, thats dispelled the myth of them being cr*p for me, although I feel so guilty admitting it.....
drpellypo
I've had a ride in a couple, a diesel, and a petrol, and they were both really nice places to be in, and the engines were superb (they are BMW's, after all.) I really don't like the look of them though, no matter what colour! ANd surely having a 1 series is making a statement similar to the one of a Boxster driver, eg, I've made it, but not quite as well as I would have liked, so I can't afford the decent version of this car. theduisbergkid
Yup, the interior was top notch, much better than my last 2 5 series. I hate the BMW image, but don't agree with you on the Boxster, I think its a cracking car and I don't think people really see them as a poor mans 911, which is what I think you're driving at. [/ QUOTE ] that is hardly how it read, if you do not agree with such tosh why perpetuate it? not picking on you in particular (well I am actually) but its amazing how often like this is flung about by stupid people who have not even driven a Boxster or 1 series themselves, let alone be able to afford either

theduisbergkid
Adam, don't worry about Dr P, he's simply a Phaeton driver who hasn't made it (yet).... Back on topic, the 118d was corker, and I won't be quite so rude about them in future....
JamesB
If I was doing more driving, I'd certainly think about a test in a 1 series (although doubt I'd be able to resist the M Sport). I really didn't like them at first but then I tend to be quite conservative and always take a while to adjust to relatively radical new car designs. I have to say that I like the looks of a lot of the BMW range now (1, 3 and 5 series) and think they do a really good job on their sportier models. theduisbergkid
I dismiss the X5 too (unless you want to look like footballers wife). I once lost a contract at BMW Munich for refusing to pay a bribe many years back, that might also explain some of my dislike for this brand. steelwind101
I quite liked the one series, to small in back and its hard to get out of if your in the back. If you only need to occasionaly use the back doors and want an upmarket hatch its quite nice. I had a X5 but i got rid of b/c of stick people gave me. It probably wasnt for me either. I have a 5 series an apart from the wheel nuts going rusty its been all good. I think its probably wrong to judge people on what they drive, you never know what they have in the garage or how they feel about spending money on cars!! I admit I cannot afford £60k for a new 911 and even if I could, I would still feel inadequate because it's not a turbo or a GT3 RS. Does that make all the Boxster piss takers feel better now. drpellypo
Hahaha - I've opened quite the can of worms. It was a tongue in cheek comment. I really hope everyone else sees that. As for the BM - if they weren't so expensive, I might consider one, but you unless the brand is really really important, there's plenty other cars that almost equal it for much less money.
