S80PMC
I've got a 2004 A8 4.2Q & currently have a dual SIM set-up which works fine apart from the hassle of having to remember to type the code to swap SIMS evertime i want to switch from car/handset to my regular handset, however i'm used to this now. Here's my problem, my company having been aquired are issuing us with iPAQs instead of BlackBerry's & these will also be our company phones so being GPRS or whatever it's called this does not support Dual-SIM so my set-up won't work in a couple of weeks. I have no intention of physically swapping SIMS every time i get in & out of the car as the SIM will no doubt get damaged, so i need to look at an alternative set-up?? I know later A8's could have BlueTooth but mines about 6mths too old so does not have this. What are my options?? Can i get BT retro-fitted & if so how much does it cost?? I could get one of those headsets, as the iPAQ is BlueTooth, however the battery life would be terrible, i hate wires visible in the car & hate those earpieces. What can i do? craigyb
The new SAP profile phone module is a straight(ish) swap out for the existing module in your car and will give you the stand bluetooth handsfree profile and also the new SAP profile if you phone supports it. Basically I can complete a complete swap out from the handset to the bluetooth setup and replace the phone with the trim, and update your MMI to support the phone kit etc.
mlillywh
I have exactly the same problem. I'd be interested in the approx price of the bluetooth swap out Here is what I do - I bought a t-mobile SIM card only and put £10 on it. This lives in my car phone When I jump in the car, I redirect my main mobile to the car phone number - takes 10 seconds - would be quicker if I could figure out how to make it a shortcut This sorts out incoming calls but for outgoing I am paying on my own SIM which is not ideal. I only really phone home on this SIM If I am on a long journey I put the SIM of my main mobile in, but for me this is the exception rather than the rule. I seem to remember one of the networks did a thing where you could have two phones going to the same bill - this might work out, but only if the company will pick up the bill (mine wont!) nikw
For my work number I have two SIM cards, one in the car kit and one in my normal handset. When in the office my handset is on and the car kit off; calls come through on the handset. When I get into the car I turn my handset off and the car kit switches on with the ignition; calls then come through on the car kit. Calls made from either device show the same caller ID as long as only one is switched on. If both are switched on calls will come through on the primary device (handset), and outgoing calls on the car kit will have a different caller ID. So, when I get into my car I switch off my work handset and (via a shortcut) divert my personal phone on to my work number. Hey presto all calls come through to the car, and any outbound calls are billed to my work number in the usual way. Answerphone messages waiting on my work handset appear on the car kit after a few moments and can therefore be dealt with in the car safely via the car kit. This is an Orange service called Single Number which costs £30 to set up plus £3 per month (all ex VAT). Unfortunately it only seems to be available to business customers, although I imagine it might be possible to persuade Orange cust servs to provide it to you as a private customer if your monthly spend is high enough. I'm not an Orange employee, but I do find this service very useful!

craigyb
The cost to swap from GSM to SAP with bluetooth, including armrest trim replacement and MMI update etc is £549.

[/ QUOTE ] That don't sound too bad & i guess you're in the North West?? I'm not far from Wigan. What is SAP (not the ERP software company i assume )? The current handset is under the armrest (not in it) in a tray like thing. Is your install all-in? (may need to speak to you so i'm sure what's involved). Finally are cradles available to in-car charge, as i recall in my previous car (E60 M5) when connected via Bluetooth the phone power drains very quickly. craigyb
The SAP is the SIM access profile, it is basically a profile for bluetooth that connects to your phone, reads the SIM profile out and then locks your phone down, the car is then the phone, pretty much like what you have now, but it clones your SIM over bluetooth without the need for the second SIM. Benefits are excellent signal strength, text messages and no battery use, downside is a limited number of phones, mainly Nokias, Siemens Benq. The kit also works in normal mode if your phone does not support SIM access profile. The price is all in regardless of what bits of trim I need to replace.
