Ollie_A3 Posted April 15, 2007 Report Share Posted April 15, 2007 Hi All, Im looking @ doing my direct access relatively soon but havent found that much info on the net, and after emailing a few companies without a response, i thought i would try here! For anyone that has recently completed the DAS, i have a few questions; Is the CBT, and theory test all part of the course or do you have to take them before starting the course? I know you lend the training companies bikes but what about leathers/protective clothing, and helmets etc? Im sure there was a few other things but i cant remember them at the mo! First things first I booked my CBT with a local training school which cost ~£90 which included everything (Helmets, protective clothing, gloves, insurance waiver etc) Then I took my theory test which you can book online at https://pt.dsa.gov.uk/tests/online_booking_1.asp Now I have just passed this theory test yesterday and have booked my DAS for the end of May. How many days have you chosen to do the DAS over mate, or do the instructors evaluate you and then decide for you? Also how much are you paying for the DAS if you dont mind me asking? Normally the instructors tell you how long they think you'll need when you do your CBT. I think the DAS is about ~£340 for the 3 days + about £55 on top for the test. And 475 for a 3day DAS course, but that includes the test. Both of these prices are way more than what u are paying tho. Maybe i should have a look around. [/ QUOTE ] The CBT can be part of a DAS course - it was of mine. You can usually choose between doing a 3, 4 or 5 day course dependant on your competence / experience on a bike. EG, if you have riden motocross for ten years then you probably won't need 5 days!! I did mine at a place in Aylesbury over 4 days, travelling from Birmingham each day as I like the instructors there and figured it was worth the trip. I did the theory test before I went (you have to do that first) and spent the morning of day 1 in a car park on a 125 before going out on the roads in the afternoon - thus you have a CBT at the end of day 1. Days 2 and 3 were taken up on the 500 gearing up for the test on day 4. 2002 when I did mine and it was £500 all in Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ive tried another local place and they do exactly the same course, bike, and protective clothing etc as the other place, but they charge £95 for the CBT, and £408 for the 3 day DAS, so a fair saving really! You can get a reduced rate if you do a 2 on 1 course which is what I'm doing with my mate. I think it would pay to do it with someone you know who is half decent incase you get a complete muppet with you who will hold your progress up. Hudson Posted April 18, 2007 Report Share Posted April 18, 2007 I passed my DAS 4 months ago and went with the same guy who did the CBT, all in the DAS was £500, but this did not include the CBT. I had never ridden so much as a scooter before so needed 5 days, we also were 1 to 1, which i think is ideal. He was also an advanced instructor who had been riding and training for over 20 years. Remember it is not just about cost, it is down to how you feel about the instructor, the lessons are firstly to make you safe on the road and only then are they there to get you through your test. Passing a test will not save your life, where as 100% in depth training are skills to take with you and will save your life. There does appear to be a lot of ''turn up and pass'' type schools openining up, just pick the instructor like you would a builder/plumber etc, ie recomendation, they could save your life with what they teach you. Veracocha Posted April 22, 2007 Report Share Posted April 22, 2007 Statistically the people most likely to crash are people who have carried out a DAS course and then gone straight onto a more powerfull bike which is understadable. I did exactly that a few years ago! Its easy to get cocky after a months when you start getting quicker. Scotty Posted May 1, 2007 Report Share Posted May 1, 2007 I've said for the last year or two that I'm going to get around to getting my licence. I quite enjoy bikes although I have only ever been a pillion which I've done many times including on an R1 - never again. It was far from comfortable!! This thread resparked me into action so I'm now booked for my CBT on Sunday. The only thing I'm fearing is that I'll be the one old git (38!) amongst a load of 17 year olds I actually have no intention of getting a bike... although it may be useful having the licence at some point. Does this make me stupid/weird for going for my licence? It's just one of those things I've always intending ticking off the list. wantmygti Posted May 1, 2007 Report Share Posted May 1, 2007 I got my license 18 months ago and have never sat on a bike since. I'd always wanted to get my license so I did. I found that the students were a real mix. The CBT definately had a large number of 16 to 20 year old, but the rest of the course was just me and one other student so it didn't matter who was booked in on other courses. Have to say it was the best 5 days of my life! So much fun. And since I'm now buying a house, the temptation to get a bike is getting stronger! When you get your own bike (which you will!!!)... it just gets better. Scotty Posted May 6, 2007 Report Share Posted May 6, 2007 Step One complete! I did the CBT today. It was quite simple......once you got the touch with the clutch. I stalled about 6 times or so and once tried pulling away in neutral during the 2hour road session One guy on the course showed that he was gonna struggle very early on when despite a really patient instructor, he failed to get a 125 onto it's stand after about 5-10mins!! He later held the throttle open and dropped the clutch resulting in his bike and three others that were lined up being damaged. He only suffered grazed knees but a visit to AE ended his day.
