Audi B6 cambelt change help needed from new member

Had cambelt change & service completed by an audi dealer on my Audi A4 130tdi a couple of months back.

Since, the fuel consumption has slowly dropped.

Taken it back several times but still dropping on fuel consumption.

Suspect the cambelt has not been correctly fitted.

Any ideas please?

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Bit of a strange one this.

Always had a reliable 49-50mpg but since belt change etc this has gradually dropped & now down to 45mpg.

Performance has marginally dropped.

Can't think of what the cause is but it is starting to getting very disconcerting.

Engine starting/running ok? No strange noises? Pulls ok when accelerating? I'd be looking more at things like getting spark plugs replaced and other basics....If the cambelt hasn't been fitted properly then I'd be VERY wary of driving the car. If it slips or breaks then you'll be looking ata a very costly engine rebuild.

Had full service @ same time by the Audi dealer. No spark plugs as diesel. No strange noises but i feel it could pull slightly better 0-60.

All i can work out is it must be over-fuelling for some reason since this work has been done.

Take your point about costly engine re-build, hence great concern.

Could be that they did not use locking pins and now the timing is very slighyly out.

That was my 1st impression when I got the car back. When I checked the dipstick I found they had overfilled by nearly half a litre of synthetic oil which FIREdevil.gif annoyed me.

Thought this was a very sloppy service & then the fuel consumption started to diminish.

Interesting, locally it's pants on fuel but a tad better on a long haul.

Off to a very reliable indie on Tuesday where i should have taken it in the 1st place but i thought being a cambelt change as well as service i had better play "safe" & have it done by an Audi dealer.

Thanks for your welcome & hi to all. Great site 169144-ok.gif

regarding the oil overfill, is there not a sticker under the bonnet somewhere that states this can damage the cat.

I had a VW dealer do this to a golf that i owned,I check the oil before I drive away now, had the dealer put the car back on the ramp and do the job properly

Yep, did the same as you.....straight back & got them to drain it off!!!

Told them this is NOT good for a cat but the service guy tried to deny it!!

Plus, they have a gauge when re-filling the engine oil which should not allow this to happen.

Suggested to him timing very slightly out but he denied this as a possibility. Every time they have had the car back it gets put on diagnostic machine which declares it ok.

But hey, tomorrows another day, another garage & hopefully another of life's probs solved.

Hence my quote "sloppy" service.
