S4teve
Well it was bloody inevitable really wasn't it. 5 months after the off-side aux rad gives up the nearside decides to show remarkably similar symptoms. When I had the first one fixed under warranty I kicked up a fuss to get the other one done as well, Audi refused. The real issue is I am due to take the car touring across France on Friday and, given I only noticed the problem late today I'm not sure if it will be fixed in time. I would be so pi55ed to drive something else on the trip as I have been really looking forward to taking the S4. I will be straight into the dealer's 1st thing tomorrow to kick off. I have had a whole catalogue of issues in the time I have had the car and part of me just wants to drive the thing through the show room window and let them keep it. I clearly can't risk driving the car across France so I have to get it fixed but will I get it back by Thursday night?? If not what are the chances of an S4 Cab loan car............ OK don't answer that.
spikeyboy
Sorry to hear your news. If its any consalation it only took 2 days to get mine fixed, part wasnt in stock so took them the first day to get the part and they fitted the next day - so hopefully you will be good for friday. Wishing you luck
S4teve
Got the car into the dealers today and they agreed the symptoms sounded like aux rad but after 3 hours of pressure testing they found nothing wrong. The Technician was v good and thorough in investigation and found evidence of water leaking which was traced back to the expansion / filler tank. The conclusion drawn was that water leaked from the expansion tank. I'm not sure what I make of this as the water is normally sitting quite happilly between the min and max. What would cause the water to escape through the overflow valve in the expansion tank???? I guess a pressure test which was carried out with both a cold and then hot (well warm) engine should find any weaknesses. What are people thoughts?? EssFour
The leak is probably coming from the expansion tank pressure cap. This is the only item of the cooling system that is not subjected to a pressure test. Read on another forum that someone was having the exact same symptons that would indicate an aux rad failure. Turned out to be the filler cap.
EssFour
Here is a link to another thread. The owner did not have a visible leak but could smell coolant. Linky
S4teve
Thanks Essfour that link was really useful, sounds like my recent problem could be the same. The rad cap has got a valve built into it which I suppose could be letting by when the car is being thrown around. Thanks again
