Ian_C
Fcuk me gently. The way he gathers the slide up just in time to slot through the 2 meter wide cattle grid gates at 60(?) mph. Ian
JamesB
I just can't watch rallying with the sound turned up because it reminds me too much of MrsB: "Hairpin left, 200... slow down" "20, easy right... not that easy" "100, over brow... you're going too fast" "70, flat left... any quicker and it's the divorce court"
Mollox
All the more impressive when you consider he must have had the world's worst co-driver... Within 10m of the start: "Right, maybe" WTF??

NewNiceMrMe
..and another thing, Vatanens co-driver for many years was none other than Dave Richards - of Subaru WRC, Prodrive and of course, now, Aston Martin fame. Strange that he only ever won 1 world championship, but he was competing at a time of true greats, with the likes of Walter Rohrl (now the senior Porsche road tester), Biasion et al. Oh, and a certain Juha Kankunnen came to the sport and pretty much taught every one to drive in Vatanens latter years too. His record makes Tommi Makinen look like an amateur. Over 700 stage wins compared to Makinens 350-ish. I used to love WRC, but its hey-dey is a dim and distant memory now. In the 80's the quality of drivers on the circuits together was nothing short of astonishing. You could have hand picked all the best drivers of all time, and it was as if they'd been thrown together for a decade just for viewing pleasure. A stunning decade that I was privileged to witness WRC through.
