Plasma panel vendors fund research which (Shock! Horror!) shows that their products are better than LCD panels. coffee.gif

Amused to watch the Pioneer bloke keep a straight face while claiming that 1024x768 is actually higher resolution than 1920x1080. yelrotflmao.gif

Each to their own though, I suppose.

Panasonic where the ones who originally orgainised the review, they sell more LCDs than they do plasmas.

You don't need to be in teh dark, jsut a normally lit room will show the differences in black levels and depth.

An LCD can't resolve its full resolution with moving images, put a test pattern up, they are really poor.

Exactly. This might also explain why the next display technology will be based in principle in a similar way to Plasma & not LCD (though using CRT technology too). I've never liked LCD for video use regardless of it's 'higher res' capabilities. And as Gizze says, Panasonic sell more LCD than plasma, so I would say it's fairly good 'proof' that one is fundamentally better than the other. The fact that other Manu's are now joining the club says a bit too IMO.

Good find Gizze.

I was just about to buy an LCD.

Would plasma deal with a PS3 (fast moving images) well enough Gizze? I was told LCDs work better for games consoles but I'd rather have a better image.

The two displays in that video clearly shows better blacks for the Plasma. Will it be better overall? (IE Sky, PS3 etc?)

What do you mean by that, Guy? Surely there are the same number of pixels no matter what it's displaying?

re. games etc - we use plasmas for demos not LCDs. So does everyone else at GDC!

plenty of fast moving 3d images etc.

A plasma is far better for games, and if you play any games where low lighting is involved, like gears of war, resident evil etc. then it is a must as an LCD simply can't show detail in the darker areas.

Resolution shouldn't change and it doesn't in the real sense, however if you put a test pattern up that shows detail you will see detail is lost.

For example, there are patterns that show you how much detail a given resolution should show, similar to this...

DI39Fig04.gif

When you start to move that pattern about on screen you should still be able to see it all, the fact that you can no longer see the Pal resolution on an LCD sort of makes the fact it has a 1920x1080 res in the first place completely redundent!!

LCD is great for shop windows, for use in a conservatory or where there is a lot of light on screen, but for serious viewing of video material at anything over SD material it falls on its arse.

I have my PlayStation3 running on a Panasonic 42" PH9 series plasma display via Component connection running the PlayStation3 on 1080p mode. The display then re-samples the signal to fit the native resolution of the display. The picture is mind blowingly good.

My screen does a fantastic job with standard dvd movies too....... and Blu-ray is one step above.

I have had no problems with screen burn at all and that was proved when a accidently left my PlayStation3 on for 6 hours!!!

Ran the screen saver (white bar scrolling across the screen) and it got rid of any minor retention caused.

Amazing stuff to be honest.
