What should I know about Porsche 911's?

For the past 6 months I've been looking for a new car, I was looking at the new Cupra and Alfa 159.

But as I waited on the purchase I'm now in a lot better position financially due to developments at my work.

So, instead of a bit stop car I've started tentatively looking at either an RS4 cab (if they drop below 40k) or a 911 cab...

The thing is, I know nothing about the 911 apart from it looks good and should be reasonably fast.

So what do I need to know, what are the different variants (995, 996 I guess is just progressional models) What other differences are within the model range? I really have no clue when it comes to Porsches!

I'm guessing the non-turbo is more realistic. What sort of power were they producing 2001/2002?

0-60?

mpg?

Average servicing costs?

Can you get people in the back?!

Do they hold there value fairly well?

What would be a safe all round bet? I'm going to have a blast in a RS4 next week so at least that gives me some level of comparison.

I eagerly await the wisdom of the wise.....

As always it depends on the model and what you want to do with it. You mention a cab RS4 do you want a cab 911?

Basic 911 is the Carrera2, the 4 is 4 wheel drive and the S is more powerful.

997 is the current model 911

996 is the previous model and probably the price range you are looking at.

£40k is a new Boxster for drop top motoring or a Cayman (like mine).

The dreaded design faults of the RMS failure & Intermediate on the 996's and 997's (also boxter etc) check out the Porsche club of gb for more info (I almost bought a 996 C4S) and would not buy/own a Porsche without a warranty running (and many wouldn't entertain buying one without it either)

Great cars though but you need to factor in nearly £900 per annum for the OPC warranty (good value in comp. to Land rover and BMW warranties) 169144-ok.gif

In brief, no such thing as a 995. Previous version to 996 was 993. Assuming a budget of £35-40k you are looking at facelift 996, a nice car. Probably an 03 or 04 car depending on model.

3.6litre 320bhp

variants are 2, 4 or 4S (turbo out of budget)

2 = 2wd, 4 = 4wd, 4S = 4wd with bits off the turbo - namely bodykit (excl rear wing), brakes, wheels/tyres, suspension

4S looks 10x better and comes with a few extra goodies like leccy seats and upgraded speakers, but it costs more. If you are used to poerful RWD cars the 2wd should hold no fears and it is the purer drive.

0-60 5.2 seconds

15-30mpg depending on how/where you drive

back seat is pretty crap, one adult can get in sideways unless front seat occupants are midgets.

Servicing - on a four year cycle £400 £600 £400 £800 excluding any wear and tear items.

Any Porsche that age will hold value well as it has already taken a 50% hit.

Buy a car with a Porsche warranty (ignore any 3rd party ones), if it does not have one you have to get Porsche to do a 111 check for £300, you will have to fix anything that is wrong, then it is £900 pa to maintain it.

Avoid tiptronic - it is a shyte gearbox
