Hi All,

If you need to buy another car, let's say for the wife and you will be paying for it as well as you will be driving it sometimes as well, would you buy another GTI?

What if your wife does not realy like the hatch back design of the GTI, would you still buy it?

Assuming you are driving a manual GTI at the moment and the one you're going to buy is a DSG, then you can have both laugh.gif

....Not if she was going to be the one mostly driving it. And not if you want her to stay sweet grin.gif

If she was cool about it, I'd probably want to buy a Mk5 R32 as an additional car........or a Porsche!

Your problem is the same one the Fresco household is wrestling with! Mrs. Fresco is v. down to earth and not into cars, but even she admits that the Land Rover has to be replaced in the next 12 - 18 months, so the search is beginning. Now the fact that this cuts right across my own plans to buy a MY2008 Boxster is neither here nor there!

Anyway, Mrs. Fresco says a Mini Cooper S Convertible, I said Audi Allroad. Some debates still to be had, then!

Despite my undying love for my GTI (and Mrs. Fresco!), I don't think I would be replacing any of our cars with a GTI in the future, but that's because we need to go down the road of a weekend car (i.e. Boxster) and a family car for continental runs (i.e. Allroad or similar). No more Land Rovers, though.

Mine runs out of warranty in Feb '09 which is before the MkVI GTI (allegedly) will be launched... there's no way I'm keeping it once the warranty expires so not sure if to replace with another MkV in a years time and then keep that for two years before replacing with a MkVI. Or keep the current one for 3 years and replace it with something cheap in Feb '09 until I can get a MkVI a few months later...

Over the next 4-6 weeks I have to make a decision on a new company car to the value of up to about £22k. Whatever I choose, I will have to stick with for 3 years (unless I choose to leave the company).

I have to be honest, my heart leads me to another GTI - perhaps a white one. However, with 2 very little 'uns (16 months baby and a 4 year old), I could do with something with a slightly larger boot. That said, at a push I could still manage with a Golf boot as it's a sensible shape.

If you like your GTI like my wife and I do then I personally see no reason not to have another one. Some people I speak to about this think I'm a bit mad considering having two cars exactly the same at the same time. The thing is, aside from maybe an Audi A3 2.0T S-Line,nothing else appeals to me in this class. The GTI still seems to be the car that even the journalists decide that they want to drive home despite sometimes rating other cars as more performance orientated. Just my opinion and others may disagree but the GTI does everything well, some things extremely well and nothing badly 169144-ok.gif

Why does the warranty running out worry you M_B? Have you had some reliability issues? One of my considerations when buying my GTI was that I may well keep it for 5 years or possibly longer and having previously had nightmare experience with Vauxhalls, Peugeots and Fords even within warranty periods felt I could trust a VW.

I bought a used MkIV 1.6 SE from a dealer which was just over 3 years old, 9k miles and came with a years warranty - ran it for 2 1/2 years and at around 37k miles the gearbox went. The dealer quoted £2,400 quid (the car was worth £3.5-4k!!!) so I tried to get it done at an independant but they couldn't find a gearbox! I tried for two weeks on various sites like findmeabox.com or something but nothing - I was travelling with work a lot at the time so this ended up being quite stressful. In the end I called VW UK explained the car had always been serviced by a main dealer and was low mileage for its age. They came up with the goods 169144-ok.gif and paid 70% of all costs which I was really happy with and went out and placed an order for a brand new GTI!

I was happy with the result (less so with myself for not calling VW UK in the first place) but had the car been under warranty I wouldn't have had half the hassle.

So after that I decided never to have a car out of warranty again (unless it's cheapo runaround, that I could afford to just write off)

Fresco1 - have you looked at any of the latest SUV's on the market. I'm just about to place an order for a new Honda CR-V for the wife. It's a really nice motor. Well put together, large and versatile interior at a sensible price. Incredible value upgrades also. For an extra £3000 over the mid range model you get DVD satnav, 18" alloys, leather, reverse parking camera, electically adjustable & heated front seats, panoramic sun roof and a stereo upgrade. Sat nav and leather on my GTI would've cost more than that alone - 2 years ago.

We have been looking for a while to replace her car.

looked at practical and also non practical (EOS etc)

Don't know how this has happened but she seems the one using the GTI the most blush.gif no idea how she worked that one. confused.gif

We looked at maybe another GTI but there imho too expensive at the current prices for what they are both new and used. (I got mine at a big discount one time offer)

I think we will end up with a new octavia vRS as i can get one cheap due to family contacts for less than a 2+ year old GTI. The extra boot space will help with family stuff too.

really? an extra year from veedub or a 3rd party?

I'm not certain but I should imagine VW (or an approved VW company )will offer a warranty through the dealers. I'm sure there are several independent companies I've read about on TSN which offer extended warranty plans. I may consider one myself depending on cost as my car will probably only have covered 10-12k miles at the 3 year old stage and therefore some things that you may expect to appear could still be developing (wiper motors, folding mirrors, anything turbo related etc)

Thanks all,

Well, given that my wife and I have no children yet and road here in Bahrain are getting more crouded day after day. The 5 door GTI being a small car is not a problem at all, as a matter of fact it is an advantage imo. Yet, I definitely cannot afford any Porsche at the moment and not for another 10 years if I'm lucky.

Having said that and although most of you won't buy another GTI and me having to borrow about 10% of the price of the car, I foud that the GTI is the best practical car I can put my money in. Therefore, I've ordered a 5dr gray GTI with DSG, Xenon lights, cd changer, cruse control, parking sensors, fabric seats, 18s, folding side mirrors, hand rest and MFS.

The 18s will go on my manual Silver 06 GTI and will put the 17s on the DSG for the wife.

The car should be here in a week time and I hope I'm doing the right thing not buying a toyota or a nissan.

Well I am not sure, I have an early 55 (Black 3dr, winter pack and cruise control) with 22k on the clock. Looking at R32, GTI Ed 30 or basic GTI. Completely undecided about what to do.

Is it worth spending extra money for 4WD (people seem to think not), and is 230PS through two wheels too much. Help, any thoughts folks.

A Warm Welcome to Tyresmoke, baggiebird 169144-ok.gif. My thoughts/opinions are:

R32

4WD delivers extra grip. V6 sounds glorious. Fuel consumption potentially haevy if you drive it enthusiastically. More expensive to tune to get bigger results. Feels 'heavier' to drive than GTI. More expensive to insure?

GTI Ed30

Can easily handle the extra bhp - It's designed by VW to do so and it's just a question of driving skills, you can spin the wheels of any performance car if you don't learn its 'feel'. As a special edition it'll hold value well. It's got everything the standard GTI has plus some nice styling extras.

GTI

Turbo delivers a nice punch but car is extremely comfortable at any speed. lots of tuning options available. Nimble and fun to drive. Better body styling than the Mk5 R32 in my opinion.

Bottom line is that only you can decide - Test drive each and decide accordingly. They are all Mk5 Golfs and great all-rounders.

I think I've looked at all the SUVs, but we've had 2 Land Rover's now and I think the 'attraction' of an SUV is now gone ...

Although we like the LR, and it's great for kids and kiddie junk, I'd be more tempted into a sports saloon or estate. I've loved Allroad's since I first drove my neighbours about 2 years ago (they since emigrated and took the Allroad with them, naturally!). I'm very taken with the new model, I've opted out of a company car scheme but am giving some thought to jumping in again for the LR replacement.

A 3.0tdi Allroad shifts, and is an amazing cruiser. You either love them or hate them .. ! heart.gif
