Any progress with this? I was contemplating next year, but could be tempted. If you're cutting across the UK you might be reasonably close to my part of the world, so I could be very tempted to join in ...

Anything concrete in terms of dates / travel plans etc?

And I'm on leave the first 2 weeks in August - we overlap!

I'm originally from Dublin, my GTI spends a lot of time on the Stena Explorer. I live near Guildford, which if you took the tunnel would be kind of on the way, if it was a ferry you'd be heading from Portsmouth (where I work). Either way, yes, you'll be close.

Sat nav for the route!

I'm keen, what next? Shall we take offline and contemplate route / accomodation / pricing? I might be able to get hotel deals through IAPA.com, presume we also need 2 buckets so we can be swept up off the Ring?!

I wonder if we post in the General Cars thread and ask for details from Ringers? They'd let us know all the details / costs, I'd imagine.

Cheers,

Phil

PS - Am at work, so will check replies tonight!!

phil,

couple of good ideas there, ur right about posting in

general cars thread, i came across another vw forums

website "vagdrivers.net" where im gonna register and

stick up a posting.

hope 2 hell we wont need those buckets! i'll b

gettin a bit of track practice in a few weeks b4hand,

goin 2 thruxton and doin the ultimate supercar

experience, cant wait 4 that, some serious

machinery 2 get a caning and also a spin in a

formula renault single seater 2 top it off!

talk 2 ya,

glenn.

I'll stick something in the general cars thread then.

Have done more research, I reckon it's a quick enough drive from France, around Brussels and on towards Nurburg. One day would see it done with plenty of rest, it's not that far. Maybe an overnight, then the Ring. Have info on Ring coming tomorrow.

Have discussed with Mrs. Fresco.

"I'd like to go to Nurburg"

"Why, what's there?"

"A racetrack that kills plenty of people, wrecks cars, great fun and Jackie Stewart reckons it's lethal"

"Oh"

Permission not yet granted, plus there was some mention of 'what about our family holiday in summer then?' etc etc

Anyway - ignoring the above for now! - my other thought was if I go to Nurburg then I'd travel on to the Czech Republic afterwards (used to live there) maybe meet Mrs. Fresco in Prague and drive up to Karlovy Vary to 'partake of the ancient spa waters'. And beer.

So .... some advanced planning going on, need further advice, also wondering - open to all - would it be sensible to get the GTI it's first service and a new set of tyres immediately after a Ring?

planning should b straight4ward enough. tickets 4 laps of the

ring can b bought in advance online. i assume its just a

matter of turning up at the tunnel and away we go. as 4

accom, i reckon the best thing would b 2 look 4 hotels or

decent b&b's along the way?

a lap in the m5 ring taxi can also b booked...flat out with

a pro racing driver, that would b awesome!

so i guess if we can get a couple of others on board it

would just b a matter of finalising dates.

i wonder what the situation is with insurance?

im fully comp but seeing as its a closed circuit im not

sure if regular road insurance would suffice, though

technically its not racing. any thoughts on that?

I'd love to go but I'm so scared of wrecking the car. I'm a sensible/good driver but it only takes one mistake.

The idea I've been trying to sell to mates is to buy a good handling cheap car between 4 of us- (found a 205 gti 1.6 with 56k and fpsh for £1000), split the cost and go down in two cars and use 205 to drive around in for a few days and leave there if it gets killed.

Hi

its classified a public toll road not closed circuit but you must check with your individual insurance.

Further research has yielded:

1. Your insurance is invalid, estimate £400 for a day on the Ring if you can even get a UK company to quote

2. Sensible advice from Ringers is don't take your best car! Anything you can't replace for cash you shouldn't be bringing (e.g. >£20K GTI's).

3. Ring Taxi's have a 6 - 12 month waiting list

4. You can hire local Ringtools such as Golf TDIs, BMs, etc for about Euro 500 for 2 days upwards

5. Beginners may wish to seriously consider leaving their 'performance' cars at home the first time to the Ring

6. Everyone who's done it reckons it's jump.gif

7. In Summer you could be faced with lengthy stoppages, maybe one crash per lap on a bad day

I think it might need a bit more planning!!
