JamesB
Very sad and the spoilsport in me says that it was only a matter of time. And is it just me or does this story not entirely make sense? There's a pic of the two cars, presumably the Brits' car and the elderly couple's, they were arrested in another car at the border and they are only looking at charges of leaving the scene of an accident and a one year sentence. Is it that it wasn't actually their car? Or it wasn't their car that did the damage? Confused

fizzbitt
[ QUOTE ] Very sad and the spoilsport in me says that it was only a matter of time. bazza_g
only a guess but looks like they stacked it, panicked, jumped into another car and made a run for the border where they got caught This one?
stevie_d
Yeah, that's the one I think. Very sad, but we must wait for all the facts to emerge before any conclusions are drawn...
danksy
yikes Feel sorry for the people that died To leave the scene is pure cowardice... you play the game... you should pay the consequences
Ari
You're quite right (although we dont' usually bother with facts on here...) It is a sad day, but as James days, you look at the footage of how some of the guys drive on these events on TV and you can't help but feel this was always going to happen. bazza_g
[ QUOTE ] You're quite right (although we dont' usually bother with facts on here...) [/ QUOTE ] I did say 'only a guess' - very sad happenings, looks like Team Polizei have withdrawn from the Gumball following the events and this post on their site [ QUOTE ] Due to treacherous weather and road conditions plus for the safety of both Gumball participants and local citizens, Team Polizei would like to announce that today they are taking a leisurely drive. It has come to our attention that several drivers have consistently been trying to “push” in order to catch up with Alex and Michael. Team Polizei would like to firmly remind all Gumballers that Team Polizei has spent months preparing and planning for such events as Gumball; our success is thanks to proper navigation and efficiency, not speed. In order to lead by example, Mater Piloten Ross and Herr Roy will be enjoying the beautiful geography of today’s stage. [/ QUOTE ]

D1MAC
And that's probably on a good day . Still, if they were driving like some Gumballers then they deserve all the they get!
CarMad
Not good ... Saw this on winding road. [ QUOTE ] As the story goes, the two were then picked up by another Gumball competitor in a BMW, whereupon they tried to flee the scene. The pair was taken into custody by border authorities at the Qafasan border crossing with Albania. They face a one-year sentence on charges of leaving the scene with an accident victim and endangering traffic. No word yet on whether the pair will face more charges stemming from the motorist’s death. [/ QUOTE ]
Mook
Very sad for the people who were killed. The muppets who tried to run off (Nicholas Morley, 30, and Matthew McConvile, 32, according to the links from Pincher above) deserve what's doubtless coming to them. ashleyadam
To think they tried to run off, I'm not surprised anyway all the partying that goes on would not be surprised if they where drunk.

bazza_g
The rally has been stopped in Bratislava [ QUOTE ] Issued by Maximillion Cooper on behalf of The Gumball 3000 Rally - 21.30 / 03 May 2007 Following our earlier release reporting yesterday’s accident - As a sign of respect we have decided that this year's Gumball 3000 Rally will not travel any further and will end in Bratislava this evening, May 3rd 2007. As the organisers of the rally we feel that it should be stopped as a mark of respect to Vladimir Cepulyoski who died today after an accident involving one the participating drivers. We are very saddened by what has happened and feel that it would be wrong to continue. On behalf of Gumball 3000, we once again extend our deepest sympathies to his family and we are doing everything we can for them. This is the first time anything like this has happened in 9 years of travelling through over 40 countries with 1000's of drivers and it is with deep regret that I make this announcement. [/ QUOTE ]
edo
I hope they go down. And they've just probably killed the Gumball for everyone else. Yes we dont know the facts, but come on. If you were hit by a car and werent doing anything wrong you wouldnt flee the scene would you? ****ers.
Tarmac_Terrorist
That's a big shame but probably the right thing to do under the circumstances.
Wallachie
That's the end of Gumball I would guess. As said above, with the power of some of the cars and the speeds reached by some of them the odds were something like this was inevitably going to happen.
RedRobin
A tragic crash....Utterly irresponsible behaviour by those who ran away (by all accounts)....The other Gumball participants will doubtless get tarred with the same brush. Not good.
_Tone_
This is very sad - as the organisers say as well though in 9 years its the forst time anything like this has happened. RIP to the poor souls who passed away. I guess its one of the issues racing on public highways - I do hope this doesnt cancel the whole thing. [/ QUOTE ] If i'm honest, i've sometimes enjoyed watching the highlights of the Gumball Rally - it's even funny at times. I remember when they were once driving through Russia and noone wanted to be the last car in line - in case they were pulled by the MAFIA/KGB. When the driver of the CL Brabus realised he was the last vehicle he done about 200mph to get to the front of the queue!! There was one thing which i objected to always, was the way some of the participants drove their cars - not giving a sh*t about other road users (some of them..not all) and for the sake of the decent people that take part, i hope it's not cancelled, but I have a feeling it will be.
