Previously ordered a Gti but due to Personal / Health reasons had to cancel

Now back to 100% and looking to buy again Spent Friday doing the rounds of some local dealers and road testing a number of cars and must say although the Gti is still an outstanding motor car. 2 others have come seriously into contention.

1 Civic Type R - That VTEC engine is really something might be frustrating to live with day to day though as I would be constantly searching for roads & traffic conditions to get it over 5500 rev's. In fact drove last 10 minutes back to dealer mostly in second gear

2. Octavia VRS really suprised me not quite as dynamic as a GTi but loved the car top interior and looked really good in Race Blue with the 18" alloys and available new with said alloys and climate & centre armrest from UK broker for just over 16K.

I have a tough decision coming up.

Just one further point it was amazing the difference in the dealer's. Sorry to say both VW dealers as per most of my previous previous experiances were appaling as if I was doing them a favour in thinking of buying a car from them, whilst both the other 2 actually seemed to want to sell me a motor car !!! both let me take the car out on my own and without me even making an appointment.

Posted this on the Gti board and was informed that I might get a slightly biased view. Unbelievable I know ... standards must be slipping over there.

Any constructive comments that dont involve mentions of taxi's appreciated.

Buy the one you like the most 169144-ok.gif

Agreed.

Hard choice to make tho, I would personally* go for the vRS 169144-ok.gif

*this is after a very bad personal experience with VW, basically I had shocking customer service and appalling build quality. This means I shall never buy VW again...

Hi,

My thoughts are: the Golf interior is a just utter boredom.

The Skoda seemed to have had a bit of revival a few yrs ago but seem to have sunk back to being neither here nor there company.

The CTR, i really liked the interior of the new one. I have driven a quite a few HOndas and never found them slow to pile on the revs. I think it is a different driving experience but one that you can get used too.

Just some thoughts, but you have to live with it all day so get the one you think you are most comfty with.

I have recently driven the new CTR, just out of curiousity, as I`ve owned the old one (EP3), and I thought they`d taken a huge backward step with the new one.

They`ve tried to go far too "space-age", and the interior is now so plasticky, especially with the big round door-speakers, that it now looks like it`s aimed only at 17 year old lads/girls.

I`ve also had a GTI, and for me it would have to be that (although I`ve never driven the Skoda)

You have to really like the Civic to live with it, I think. Both in terms of looks and its hardcore nature (compared to the other two).

If a little extra practicality is a factor, then the vRS seems the obvious choice. Same too if you want to save a couple of grand.

But if you can afford a GTI with the right kit, go for that. It is still the best all rounder. And if you get the Skoda there will be times you can't help thinking, "I could have got a Golf GTI".

By the way, if you like hardcore, you MUST try a Megane 225 before you decide. 169144-ok.gif

I'd have to agree with Garcon - You have to try the Megane 225 before you set your heart on choosing from those 3 cars you have listed. Apparently it's the best Hot Hatch on the market at the moment.

If it were only a choice of the aforementioned, then it would have to be the VRS for me - I think it looks superb and offers allot more than the other two. The Civic looks revolting & lardy and the Golf GTI, as good a car it is, is sadly becoming a familiar sight on our roads... especially up here in the North as i've noticed.

Dont think I could bring myself to buy a R26. Id be afraid it would fall to bits, the dealer's have really bad rep and I couldnt live with the interior. Would agree though from reports that it is a cracking car.

After doing the rounds today, here are my thoughts on my 3 shortlisted motors:

CTR - most exciting to drive given suitable roads clear of both traffic & cameras and you can just feel the superb engineering, but a little hard to get hold of at the moment.

GTi - Great allrounder and just about the prettiest at least in 3 door form, but overpriced and sold by W***ers. So would have to be an import.

VRS - Drives almost as good as Gti, just needs sharpening up and lowering a touch which can be addressed. I like the looks of it especialy in Race Blue with the 18" alloys and IMHO it has the best interior also stonking VFM.

Did a bit of phoning round so awaiting confirmation of prices and availabilty of my prefered specs for each b4 I make final decision.

BTW all 3 are excelent cars so dont think I really can go wrong.

Only serious alternative if it didnt have half its interior made from melted down Airfix kits would be the Leon Cupra, especialy in Candy White truly stunning.

Good choice - If you're happy then it is, whatever the option 169144-ok.gifECLIPSe.gif

Hope you got a good deal and are happy to have avoided the over priced car sold by Winkers (funnily enough I was put off the Golf for the same reasons, just with a different outcome).

BTW dealer was top notch & brought out there service manager to go through remap and other performance enhancing options which they are quite happy to fit, also no problems if I go elsewhere and will service the car and fulfill warranty as best they can irrespective of where I get any future upgrading work done.

Both of them have there cars remapped, and service guy has built his own Fabia rally car, nice guys and seemed to know there stuff. It was quite refreshing to be in a dealership where the people who work there actualy seem to be interested in the products they are selling & not simply trying to shift boxes. 169144-ok.gif

Also, dont think I could have really gone wrong with any of the cars as they are all excellent, I just went with the one that floated my boat grin.gif but wouldnt discourage anyone from choosing either the GTi or CTR. As many have said best way to decide is to take one or preferably a number of test drives in any car you are considering purchasing and think which one you will enjoy driving, owning and living with.
