forresthills
Has anyone managed to get Sky to give them a HD box for free? I already give them the best part of £60 a month and feel pretty aggrieved to give them £299 for the hardware. I know that I have to pay £10 a month extra...but if I can get the box for free, it pays for itself for the best part of 2 and a half years! I was thinking of using the old Virgin media are offering me this technique and seeing what they are will to do. I already have NTL for my broadband, so in some ways it makes sense...but I'd like to keep Sky One etc....so would prefer Sky from Sky. Any tips/advice? Cheers. Bal. shark_90
I couldn't even manage to get Sky to give it me for the £149 promotional rate that was in the shops a couple of months back - they said they didn't even know about a £149 offer! I was out of contract and it didn't make any difference when I suggested I might cancel the contract altogether if I didn't get HD at the promotional rate. I ended up going into a Currys store and a guy in there sold me the £149 box without the need for buying a TV and booked me in with Sky for an install. As for getting it for free, I don't think you're going to have much luck to be honest, let us know how you get on!!
SamD
Oddly I have tried exactly this today - was signing up for Sky + and thought that I would see if they would do me the HD box for a similar price (after all they are going to get extra rental etc out of me if they do). Sadly no luck. Still Sky+ comes next Saturday and I have my PS3 for HD content (just about to watch Casino Royale on BlueRay)
forresthills
That's the problem.... I’ve got a PS3 and seeing movies in HD has just got me smitten. Bond just looks amazing.... particularly when you see shots that show the sea. The blues look incredible. I love it. Since the footy season is pretty much finished I might hold off for a while (one of my main complains about picture quality through an analogue signal is football. The players just look like round blobs on a green screen. I walked in one night and wondered why snooker was on instead of the football). I think I'll give it a go and if they say no, I might wait until August. I'm sure they'll give it another promotional push before the footy season starts. Maybe I'll have more luck then. shark_90
I think you need to get to Specsavers also - you'll be sat in the kitchen infront of the washing machine watching the wrestling next
forresthills
It would probably be better than some of cr@p you get on Sky too! Come to think of it, why do I want to give them more money?
shark_90
I think the same all the time, but watching a film in HD makes it all worthwhile IMO
Gaunty
The quality of the HD programs on Sky is very poor, you can tell the difference between SD and HD but it isn't as good as it could be. My brother cancelled his Sky subscription and they keep trying to tempt him back, they've recently offered him a free HD box, he turned it down, I wonder what they'll offer him next. CarMad
Apparently Sky aren't trying so hard to keep customers with all the sexy deals so their churn is up but the money they are making per customer is rising because they are playing hard ball more. forresthills
Ummm looks like Virgin Media might be the way forward after all. Do Virgin Media boxes have an RF output like Sky boxes, so you can watch the same thing in another room? Also, can you use a magic to change channels? ChadW
Am too disgusted at paying £300 for what is essentailly a Sky+ box but with difrent decoder software in it for HD signal. Tried to buy one off ebay but never got the box and only about 70% of my payment through paypal back. Will have to wait for another High St. promotion then I guess as I cannot see SKY reducing the price at the mo.
Luke
a customer of mine said that he bought a tv from john lewis the other week that had the half price hd offer with it. he was advised to call sky to book the sky hd box. when he called he asked the guy if he needed any details/receipts/numbers for the offer, the guy said no mate dont worry. basically couldn't be bothered. might be worth a blag if you've nothing to lose..... copster
I just phoned my local installer and said Sky would do it for £149 installed and would they match that price - they did
khutula
I bought an HD box off eBay, and then ditched the movies as I didn't watch them, so HD only really costs me an extra £3.50 a month. If you read the small print one of the features of HD subscrition is Sky+. So if you have Sky+ and either the sports or movies it shouldn't cost you any extra a month. The football in HD is pretty amazing

ChadW
[ QUOTE ] I just phoned my local installer and said Sky would do it for £149 installed and would they match that price - they did [/ QUOTE ] Was this a local independent or a high st chain? Got to look into this route now as I don't trust getting a box off ebay now.

[/ QUOTE ] Mine from eBay - was well packaged - came in two days - couldn't ask for more. Not quite sure why Sky insist on charging for intallation if you already have Sky+ cause its just a box swap. Very difficult company to deal with.
copster
It was a local independent - Future TV I didn't have to try very hard to get this price - just sent them an email quoting Sky's price and they came back to me agreeing to price match it. I'm sure this approach would work with your local installers
forresthills
I might give this a go. I wonder if I could keep the Sky + box too? I know it's not a necessity (as HD box can record), but I don't necessarily want to watch re runs of Americas Next Top Model while having my tea. Also the multiroom box is hooked up to my MAC and setting up the series link, to then record them to my MAC would be sweet.
copster
I have multi room with 1 Sky+ box and 1 normal box. The installers are removing the normal box and replacing it with Sky HD box. So in answer to your question YES
forresthills
That's me sold!
shark_90
Yes, I have my HD box downstairs and the Sky+ box that used to be my main one upstairs in the bedroom. The £10 extra subscription for an extra box is a duplicate of your main subscription, so you can have HD box 1 for £x/month and then a second subscription exactly the same on HD box 2 for £10, or Sky+ or whatever. forresthills
Shark, Did you have to run a new cable to Sky + multiroom box? My standard multiroom box only has single core cable connected to it, while my Sky + box has the twin core cable. As I would be replacing this box with the HD the Sky + would need to be moved....hence the need for a new cable to be run?
drpellypo
Can you run HD as standard over component, and not HDMI? I had the good sense not to channel an HDMI cable into the wall when I installed the Panny. Clever me....
