v6tas
Moving house in the not to distant future so it may be time to get rid of the pride and joy and get a more cost effective option as a daily driver. The question is that i still want some fun when i drive but not the cost to go with it. A hard thing to balance but there must be something that will be a happy medium. Its over to you all for some ideas
Calm Chris
Revo a S3 or Leon 225 (up to 270), £12k will get a 20k miles 05 Leon, £11k will get a mint 40k S3 02 reg. Or for fun only, Clio Trophy £10k for 15k miles 05 reg. What do you need the car for? Do you have rug rats, do you holiday with the car, what sort of mileage will you have to cover p.a. and are you ok with other badges, or does it have to be German? Budget? Calm Chris
Oh poo, this post is doomed, I say doomed, post count makes it so. Well 6666 is out the way now, sorry for the post of oddness
Snail
[ QUOTE ] The question is that i still want some fun when i drive but not the cost to go with it. [/ QUOTE ] Whats your Budget? Id say something like a Fabia vRS/Leon FR, or maybe a BMW 120d/320d. All of those are diesel, so cheap to run, but can be had for £5k or more and should make you smile when you cane them

In answer to Chris, no it doesnt have to be German, any make/mark will be considered except anything chavy !, no rug rats but still must be pratical (ish !). The change would be primarily to cut down on fuel costs as my daily drive to work would go up from 120 miles to 400 miles per month

lazerblue
If you havn't done so already check out Autotrader website, you can register for free and its search engine is pretty good. PistonHeads classifieds has some tasty motors on it and of course there is the TSN Marketplace.
Mook
[ QUOTE ] A hard thing to balance but there must be something that will be a happy medium. Its over to you all for some ideas [/ QUOTE ] A happy medium is to stop being so feckin stupid, thinking about selling your R32, even though it's silver and, as a result, slower than all the other colours Buy a cheaper house and keep the car, FFS. khutula
The answer is pretty simple really. Keep your .:R32 start modding it and you will get better MPG Until recently I did over 300 miles a week in mine on my daily commute - but I would rather stomach the petrol costs than get rid of it. When I bought it I knew it wasn't in the slightest bit economical.

Unfortunately bigger houses mean bigger mortages im afraid

R32TIM
400miles a month.......... are you sure thats right? So your only increasing your commute by 3360miles per year. Say £1/litre = £4.54/gallon = 3360/(say 25mpg)= 134.4 gallons = £610 = £50 month. So stay in once a month and keep the car. i'd hate to do the same calculation on my fuel bill. pontyslapper
Find trimmage around the house first... Cut Sky down to bare minimum watchable - one box = £21, possible saving of about £20+ depending on package and add-ons... Strip the broadband connection down - could be another few quid. Strip the phone - another few quid. I actually saved money by going on a 'higher' BT Together tariff, strange but true. Strip the mobiles - check what you are paying for against what you are using - I found I was paying a couple of quid a month for stuff I used one in a blue moon - also check your tariff. Rent DVD's from Blockbuster locally? - get organised and get an online rental deal - Tesco's do one from £4.47 a month for 2 DVD's. The major biggie as R32TIM said - stay in a few times a month or drink at home before going out and take half the amount of cash out and no cards. Arrange lifts not taxis. Shop tightly - experiment with the 'value' ranges or cheaper alternatives - it might on be pence on each thing, but over a trolley its a few quid. Alastair_A3
you could go really silly and get an older 911, but that wouldnt have sensible running costs would it .. 15k would get u a used 120d, 0-60 7ish seconds 40+ MPG Or if the 1 series isint your thing, used Golf/A3. Or, how about the new Clio 197, saw one today in blue, lovely looking thing I also really like the new Cooper S Go for the bigger house, it may seem a heartbreak selling the R, but i made some sacrifices 7 years ago when i bought my current house, and now im sitting on a goldmine
Brisel
Don't be silly, Tim! Just because your mileage is going up a bit & your cash is going down doesn't mean you have to sell your beloved R - You'd have to sell the t-shirt, pen, brolly, bottle opener etc too... R32Tim has a good point - it won't cost you much more to run the R & you would still have to take a financial hit to downgrade to something like a remapped A3/Golf 2 litre Tdi S-Line/Sport. Stop thinking about selling it, man!
Rustynuts
Interesting to note that it's mostly R32 owners who're saying "Keep it". It's not just mileage to be considered. Insurance costs can be reduced, tyres will be cheaper to buy and probably last longer, servicing costs can be reduced, road fund will be less etc. if you downsize your motor. He's trying to save money to pay a bigger mortgage not justify spending more money running the R32.
Woppum
Id think about the 120d. Alone they are fantastic and great fun and with a remap, just more of the better. If your R32 is stock I doubt there would be a huge diffrence in performance and economy would be alot better. Roundabouts will have a whole new meaning too! At the end of the day, Yes i can actually afford to move and keep the R32, yes i can afford the extra fuel bills but there comes a point where working just to pay all your bills and have not a great deal for "Living" tends to pinch a bit. At the end of the day if the R32 goes at least i will have the wifes JCW Mini Cooper S to have some fun at the weekends with (if ive accumulated enough brownie points that is !!)
