18" alloy plan - foolish or could it work?

Had my car for nearly a year now and love it to bits. At the time the extra money for the 18" alloys would just tipped me over the edge of being able to buy the car (was on a strict budget).

Cleaning the car today the tyres are getting towards they end of their lifecycle, by the end of the summer I will need to purchase 4 tyres (already rotated once).

Now this is a possible plan..

Rather than purchasing 4 tyres (say 300-400) pounds, I could purchase a set of 18" monza to alloys as new as possible with as new as possible OEM tyres for around 1000 pounds (I am sure this can be done).

Sell the 17" alloys I have, get perhaps 500 pounds for them with worn tyres.

If goes to plan it would only cost me 100 pounds or so to upgrade (considering I were to purchase 4 tyres anyway)

If anyone can help with this please let me know. If you know what I can expect for my old wheels, what new ones will cost or if you have some your thinking of selling then be intouch. 169144-ok.gif

I would spend the money as they are well worth it. Problem is, you might need to settle for replicas at that price as the official wheels are £244 each inc vat at cost price (£380 is what vw will try to sell them for)

The replicas do look very impressive though.

One option is to get a used set of 18's off someone who is upgrading to the bbs 19's 169144-ok.gif

Good luck, i promise you will love the car so much more sat on your drive 169144-ok.gif

I reckon your plan will almost work (bar a £170) as I have done the same 169144-ok.gif.

I purchased my 18" Monzas on E-bay for £800. The wheels were mint with no scuffs or scratches. The tyres had around 6mm tread left all round. For around £1000 you may get a brand new set. I have seen these go for around £1100 a year ago but recently prices have dropped to around £1000.

I also recently sold a spare set of 17"s on E-bay for £330. The wheels were mint but 2 tyres needed replacing (with two on 5mm). So this confirms what Sussex Steve said above.

Finding a good set of 18" Monzas on E-bay may take a while...I suggest you set up an e-mail search alert in E-bay. If you find a set, then let the seller know you are serious and offer them a buy it now price straight away, otherwise you may lose them to someone else (this happened to me twice).

Hope this helps beerchug.gif

That is very good advice, thank you! So the 17"s sold quick enough then?

2 tyres of mine will need replacing in about 2000 miles others have around 6mm on them. 2 have pretty minor scrapes and one with some marks on the blade. Other than that they are in good condition. So looks like I need to aim for 300 pounds.

Will try and work out how to use that email alert thingy

Sold my 17"'s quite easily - someone sent me a message with an offer to "buy it now" at £300. I haggled a bit and we agreed on £330. He came round the next day and collected them.

When looking for the 18"s ask for the BBS number on the back - the most recent Monzas are RD305 I think, and the older ones are RD278 (or something similar).

Best if you can collect and pay cash as I would be suspicious of anyone not letting you do this.

These would have been OK for you - they got snapped up quick though !!...but it gives you an idea.

new 18"s

They'll be the ones I bought I had to collect them the same day though to guarantee getting them as the seller had loads of interest. You'll be lucky to get a set through letting the auction run to it's conclusion - if you spot a set you're best off making a decent cash offer asap.

I managed to sell my 17's with 6mm of tyre tread left for 400 quid - advertised them on gumtree. The guy who bought them fitted them to his VW Caddy!

A decent cash offer (to now fellow TSNer OliH, following that deal) secured my 18's 169144-ok.gif.

Re the VeeDub Transporter van, there's a quick version which is extremely quick!! I think it's okay to fit Monzas to something like a van which is a VeeDub but not pretending to be a GTI like an ordinairy Golf might be.
