Wallachie
Sounds like your air flow meter is caput, MAF it is known as. Cheap enough to fix, and it's a very common fault so don't worry.

safety69
I've just used my 3rd party diagnostics lead using vag-com version 311-2, and it cannot find any faults to do with the MAF. The only fault codes i got were related to the central locking. Can anyone please tell me if it would show a fault code in this situation, if not how could i be sure it is the MAF. cheers
safety69
Its a 1.6, the car in will hit top rev range in 1st to 4th gears but not top speed in the selected gears if you get me, any help much appreciated, cheers.
S3ENVY
Do you mean that the revs will increase to their maximum but the car wont go any faster? If that is the case it sounds like it could be the clutch slipping.
fingermouse
have you monitored the maf on a run ???? it doesn`t always show fault codes just doesnt give the right output. Havn`t done this myself but have been involved in a MAF test run

[/ QUOTE ] Well in 1st to 4th the car will hit top rev range but not the top speed in those gears, in 5th it wont hit top rev range, stays around 4500rpm and stays around 85-90mph. But where could i find the normal figures to compare?
safety69
managed to find figures on the ross-tech website "http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/fuel-trim.html" . It states "Specifications for normal operation are usually somewhere near +/- 10%". i just tested mine and its -19% at normal idle. Think i'll replace it anyway and see how i get on. safety69
The MAF on my car is a Hitachi sensor, which i've been told i can replace if i phoned hitachi automotive uk. Can anyone confirm whether replacement sensors are worth it, or is it worth just changing the whole MAF meter, cost wise.
