drpellypo
... from mum and dad's house has just bought a maybach o_O I just don't see the point! It's lovely looking though - but not as big as I imagined. They are made out to look huuuge in ads etc but in actual fact, it seemed smaller than a RR. CarMad
Figures in Autocar showed they had sold 3 in the same time RR had sold 20+ I think it was. Not my cup of tea at all.
drpellypo
TBH - it just looks like a big merc. It doesn't look special at all. The chap is apparently a car dealer, so I suspect it's either one he's got in and is selling (and driving it in the meantime.) or he's gone a bit mental. I tell you something though, I'm in the wrong job. He sells cars for a living and last year he ripped his house down and rebuilt it (cos he felt like it) and the build cost alone was way in excess of half a million. You probably only need 20k nowdays to buy a 2003 facelift W220 S600L V12 biturbo. 590 lb ft bargain! Ian

Woppum
Maybach isnt about glamour or money. Its simply about having the most comfortable time in the back of a car without being stared at constantly. In this respect nothing touches it and in fact nothing comes close. Some people look, but most dont know what it is. The 3 main problems in my eyes for the people who buy this car - Depreciation - Ian im afraid on thsi one you are way off. As they sell so few and no one wants one you will be lucky to loose less than £120k in a year on the small one or £150k+ on the big one - if they are of a decent spec. Technical problems - the phones in the car are so old they need to use the 'egg timer symbol' every time you give it a command. There is simply so much technology in the car, which would be great, but in my experiance with our car it goes wrong very often. This brings me on the the last and IMHO worst problem with Maybach ownership. Service - When you buy the car you are told you will have your own 'personal service liason manager' who will do everything for you from booking a restraunt to ordering a part. Problem is I have found it very hard to get hold of him, and when you do parts like the front phone or a seat belt clamp have taken the best part of 2 months to replace or fix! Simply a huge amount has gone wrong with my dads car and it has been a massive headache. Luckily he kept his old car too. However and this is a big point, there is nothing else he would swap it for. Its not flash really when you consider what it really is. It is the most comfortable and quiet car by a very long way. It has all the buttons in the right place - may sound small but the ergonomics are the car are so well thought about it makes the inside of the Phantom look like they have their priorities backwards. Finally - you can park it anywhere, Sainsbury’s, starbucks high street etc. At the end of the day one of the charms of the Maybach as it is just a car, a tool you dont have to care too much about it. The Phantom is different its a possession an accessory to aid your image - you cant help but care. I really like the casualness of the Maybach and am not advising him to swap. theduisbergkid
I see your point about being understated, but if thats the case, why not go for a top spec phaeton instead ?

[/ QUOTE ] 3 Maybachs vs 67 RR Phantoms registered between January and April IIRC . And how many of the 3 were registered by MB...presumably a demo in each size at a minimum. Did they sell any to real customers I wonder

Sure they are comfortable but they are nothing like a Maybach/Phantom etc.

He needs a good working car and this really is the best.
Ian_C
Well it is personal opinion I guess. I don't like being a passenger in the back. On the very rare occasions I need to jump in a cab and I'm on my own, I usually hop in the front. Unless its a TXI that is! Worth adding that I've not been in a Maybach either. Not really my cup of tea. I'd much rather have said S600. Quicker than the S55 for crying out loud! You could have six of them - all different colours - for one years' depreciation on a new Maybach! Alastair_A3
Ian you have to remember not everyone is a skint ex student Ive been there and i know what its like, but not everyone thinks of depreciation. Its pretty small priority on my list, i buy my cars for enjoyment not to make finacial sense. I make enough money these days not to worry too much about things like that and Im sure judging by Sam's parent's fleet that his parents have enough money not to care less about how much something costs or depreciates. Ian_C
[ QUOTE ] Ian you have to remember not everyone is a skint ex student [/ QUOTE ] Skint? Me? Quite simply I don't need my own car at present. With zero no claims bonus (having run around in the family cars until last year) I cannot justify insurance on anything faster. Have my own garage now, hence I seemed rude not to have something myself. Far better places for my money to go at present, but in a few years though I know full well I'll be pouring money into cars! Ian_C
Oh come on - there is depreciation and there is DEPRECIATION. 150k outright buys a whole fleet of Ferraris and Porsches!! Ian
Alastair_A3
well not really, 150k aint alot of money in this day and age, certainly wouldnt buy u a fleet of "new" ferraris and porsches! Besides what the hell is 150k when you've got a mayback, ferrari 430, S600, etc etc
Ian_C
Ahhh yes, but this comes back to the debate that the F430 actually costs very little to run assuming you bought it privately, not on finance. Deprecation free motoring in a near-500 bhp supercar? Now that is a clever purchase! Ian
