cruiser647
Can you hear the buzz of the motor when you try to squirt them? And do you get a puddle under the washer bottle? My washer jets stopped working on my 8, and the plastic tubing had perished at one of the junctions.
SneakyMcC
[ QUOTE ] Can you hear the buzz of the motor when you try to squirt them? And do you get a puddle under the washer bottle? [/ QUOTE ] Nope! Nothing?
cruiser647
Do the wipers come on after squirting (or lack of it)
SneakyMcC
The wipers are wiping, but the washers aint squirting. The pump aint pumping! Edit: The headlight washers had stopped working yonks ago....
NickGUK
What i would do is just check the connections on the 2 pumps are clean and not corroded at all, common fault on lots of cars + you never know you might get the headlight washers working again. You have to remove the air cleaner box etc to get to them, but its pretty simple job. If they are clean and good condition, simply use a multimeter or even a 12v test screwdriver, stick it in the plugs and operate the washer / wiper stalk and see if 12v is actually getting to the pump, try the same with the headlights on and see if 12v gets to the headlight washer pump to. if you have 12v at both pumps,(no's 1 and 2 on diagram) then i think thats your answer
SneakyMcC
Top post! Thanks I'll check the fuse first before stripping the mota tho!

I just looked in the drivers foot well, and the right hand side of the boot. Nothing! Wiper fuse is there, didn't see the washers. Could it be under the floor on the passenger side? NickGUK
the washer system is all under same fuse as the wipers, 25A fuse number S10 If the wipers work, then the fuse is ok Time to test the wiring to pumps

Note that I didn't say inner wheel arch or wheel arch liner, cause its just that sh1tty bit of black plassy you see when you change the wheel! NickGUK
No, check the picture i posted earlier, it shows instructions on there to. All access is from inside the engine bay
SneakyMcC
But the washer bottle is in the wing, meaning that the bumper and indicator are in the way of the pumps? I'll go take a pic. Theres a lead coming from the head light going into the part of the wiring loom that seem to be for the washers (h/light and windscreen). There seems to be some corrosion on that lead. Looks blue like coolant/screenwash. Thanks, Sneaky
SneakyMcC
Here you'll see that there washer bottle and pumps are in the wing. The pumps are hidden and the lowest part of the bottle hooks over another bar! At the top of the bottle (the filler) has a bar over it! This bottle is going nowhere wi'owt the wheel arch coming out? SneakyMcC
The feed to the lower pump goes live when activated. I guess that this is for the window washer. The highrer power feed, nothing goes live. The other thing is, does it tell us summit when the headlight washers (the actual jet mechanism) dont rise up from the bumpers bearing in mind the headlight pumps are not getting power?
NickGUK
The headlight washers wont rise till they sense pressure from the pump, so if the pump isnt working i dont think they will rise up. I know its obvious, but the headlight washers wont work till the headlights are on.... and you have to hold the washer / stalk lever for more than 2 -3 secs Turn the headlights on then check the feed to the pump What year is your car then ? i assume you had a pre faclift which is why i posted that picture, ill go check the facelift bits and bobs to
SneakyMcC
[ QUOTE ] Turn the headlights on then check the feed to the pump [/ QUOTE ] Yeah did that with a tester screwdriver, got no illumination. Screwdriver lights up when I do the windscreen washers but I get no noise/water from the pump. [ QUOTE ] What year is your car then ? [/ QUOTE ] Again you're correct, its a 1996! SneakyMcC
[ QUOTE ] if you have 12v at both pumps,(no's 1 and 2 on diagram) then i think thats your answer [/ QUOTE ] Just rechecked it. The power is getting through to both! For the headlights there just a few seconds of power when you first do the switch, I asked my daughter to hold the switch on! Does that mean I need new pumps then? Or do I need to make sure that 12v are getting through?
SneakyMcC
I have both pumps out. I have stripped the windscreen pump, that now works, but I dunno if it'll be working well enough to move the water with pressure? The headlight washer terminal is broken on the pump. I used to have a tube of solder the melted at a temp so low you could use a fag lighter and it'd conduct electricaty. Thats what I could use now
SneakyMcC
Both pumps have been stripped, leccy motors cleaned with contact cleaner (and WD40 to keep the water out). The windscreen pump had some stuff blocking it. It looks like grease when inside the pump and on the components. It floats about in water like spnuk in a bath tub...So I've heard! Anyway. The water bottle is back in and the pumps in and working! I doubt it'll last too long, but at least I know whats wrong and how to do it. Rain has stopped play now. But I reckon it'll take 1/2 hour to be back on the road. The airbox has got to go back in and a few bits need tightening, then the wheels back on and off the axle stands and hopefully I'm done So far, every time I have done a repair in recent weeks, I've found summit'telse busted! Fanx for your help gang, especially you Nik
