jaysgti1
was speaking to my dealer today who advised me it is quite possible to put the Ed 30 turbo (about £1000 for the kit) onto the standard GTI. Anyone done this or thinking of doing it? he said there shouldnt be any need to change anything else and a remap would produce about 300 BHP. RedRobin
This has been discussed quite a bit in the American forums, including one sponsor member whose business is turbos. IIRC it's a larger turbo and so it would be wise to consider modding other components if only the turbo hoses (which I'm doing anyway). I don't think that it's as simple as your dealer suggests - I could be wrong of course but it would seem to upset the designed balance. Bigger turbos have more lag too. Another question is whether it's a ball-bearing type of turbo - The standard GTI one isn't, I'm told. I believe that someone is working on a turbo+manifold and that would certainly bump up the power. But then you could be into all sorts of other supportive mods and all expensive. Quaffe diff would probably need beefed up DSG clutches....And on it goes! It gets into the realms of building a seriously competitive track car.
jaysgti1
why are you changing your turbo hoses?
Tarmac_Terrorist
The Ed 30 engine had uprated pistons etc if I remember correctly but I guess that's just VW building in a bigger tolerance. Surely as well as the bigger turbo, you would need the Ed 30 chip / map to go with it?
jaysgti1
true, my dealer who had modded his GTI seems to think the gearbox and engine can handle 300 bhp. would i need the ed 30 chip/map or if i was having it remapped anyway would i still need these? RedRobin
[ QUOTE ] why are you changing your turbo hoses? [/ QUOTE ] ....Because, dahling, SAMCO can supply them in a very pretty shade of pink . Real reason is just as a precautionary measure because my car is remapped and silicone breast implants will....Ooops! I mean silicone hoses will last a lot longer. I know I'm only a Stage1 and I'm probably being over cautious, but that's me. It's the same reason I'm getting a Forge Diverter Valve DV Thread Here EDIT: Also silicone doesn't expand as much as rubber does.
jaysgti1
am going to get the carbonio air intake first. when are the forge DV valves coming out, or are they out already? oh and had to sign my life away today at the stealers. they advised me of the recall for our ecu reflash, something to do with a warning light (emissions) fault. they said id have to sign to say i have rejected the upgrade. (as it might cause my ecu to fail. (due to having a remap on the car)

[/ QUOTE ] ....Out in USA ($250) and about to come out here. My name is on one in the first batch of 10 so I'll post in DV thread when it's out. My VW service is on Thursday so I'll switch to stock map....Dealer will upgrade my ECU if an upgrade is available....Revo will do the necessary afterwards free of charge. If no VW upgrade, I'll just switch back to the remap myself. At least that's what I'm expecting to happen having already discussed it with my dealer. [/ QUOTE ] I think you'd have serious reliability issues with a 300hp remap on the standard 2.0tfsi. That's 50% over base! The ed30 engine is apparently the S3 engine with a 230hp map. VAG changed all the internals (injectors, head, pistons, conrods, crank, revised exhaust valve timing, intercooler) on the engine just to get it to 265bhp and keep tolerances acceptable. I haven't seen higher than a 330hp remap on this engine yet even with all those changes.
