skifly
Ok - further to my previous leading post about the financing of cars I wanted to get a TSN opinion about me being a muppet and considering changing my GTI (aparrently the fastest car and all that bull )... ..to a Porsche Boxster S (987)? And how much could i look to get for a 22k, 55 plate, laser blue, manual GTI with leather and 18" Monza alloys? So whats the opinion on here of the boxster and are there any good reasons why i shouldnt (besides a few bits of paper missing from the bank)? Alastair_A3
Ive heard they are pretty good cars with sublime handling. If it were me I'd go for the BMW Z4 M Coupe/Convertible
skifly
not sure i could handle the look of the BM... I was hooked with the test drive but just wanted the TSN knowledge to throw up any curve balls i hadnt thought about. Plus with the good news phone-call I just had its looking likely that the poor GTI might be on its way to a new home. Shame the insurer (privilege) want a tracker on the car - any ideas on what to get on this front?
JamesB
I don't think I'm alone in having a high opinion for the Boxster, especially the S. They are as good to drive as many much more expensive cars. I'm not aware of any major issues that are specific to the 987 but can't claim to be an expert. skifly
so any ideas on here for a value for my car then... nobody piped up in the time allotted so must be a good idea
bazza_g
the Boxster S (987) is a fantastic car - it goes, handles and stops better than anything else for the money in my opinion - I'm still grieving for the loss of mine and I don't expect the feelings to go away anytime soon.... shao_khan
If we could justify another 2 seater than a Boxter S would be top of the list - well actually joint top with the Cayman S - both fantastic cars.
Tizzy
My 986S was the best car I've ever owned - full stop. The 987S is if possible even better - get one and you'll have the best handling, best roadster bar none.
theduisbergkid
Porker would be nice. Thought of an S2000 ?
skifly
nope not considered the s2000 at all to be honest. I will admit i did go with the opinion that i would not like the car, but i was persuaded pretty quickly. Just need to find the right car now... anyone know people selling an S? Keeping my eyes peeled.
theduisbergkid
I have reviewed one myself - http://www.teamchernobylracing.com/page16.htm
eolair
If you're going Porka, remember to factor the RPC check (£200?) and if going for the RPC warranty, another £900/yr. IIRC general advice was to make sure you get one with the wind-break - turbulence produces an interesting coiff. Me, I'm weinghing up a 944 (plus daily oil burner) against the Z4. Z4 is lovely drive, but the fearful depreciation doesn't seems to slow at all. Hmmm - now if I could just find one that hadn't been spec'd in black leather with black interior. skifly
rpc check???
Sparticus
OPC Check. That will be a once over by a Porsche Dealer, if OK will knock the £200 off the £900 per annum warranty. Check brakes and the dreaded RMS ( Rear Main Seal ) for leaks. This afflicts some 986 and 911 variants where the gearbox and engine join. Still miss my Boxster, it left its mark, a fabulous car and one you will always remember driving. I cry when the sun comes out. www.boxa.net has loads of advice for newbies and they seem to be Golf gti fans as well.
skifly
cheers all - i have pretty much been sold on the car now. Just need to find the right car now I have had a sanity check from TSN. Posted on boxa.net already, but obviously they may be a little biased .
JamesB
They tend to be fairly honest on there from what I've seen. There are a couple of 'what to look for' threads as well as the odd bad experience thread, which I think is inevitable for any car as opposed to something to get unduly worried about. Have you worked out a price for your GTi? If you don't have time to sell it privately, why not just take it to your nearest Porsche dealer and see what they say as a rough p/x guide? I can't claim to know a lot about prices but a quick browse of the usual places would suggest that you are looking at something around the £17k - £17.5k mark privately. I'm probably wrong, which will provoke people to shoot me down and get you some other ideas on price
skifly
ok... bit worried now. Have put a deposit down on a very low mileage 2005 Boxster S. But now have that wierd feeling that i might not be doing the right thing. Kindly helped by my girlfriend telling me how much she loves my GTI. This is the first car I have ever bought myself and i love it a he11 of a lot. But also really liked the boxster when i drove it. Now i really am unsure if it is the right thing to do... anyone got any decent advice on this one??
JamesB
Mate, never go on anything other than your own instincts. Ask people for what they think of a car, what are the best finance deals, how much you should be paying etc, but only you will ever know whether it is the right thing to do. My personal opinion is that you will enjoy the Boxster even more than your current car and your GF will too. However, if it's a financial issue, then don't bother. There will always be a more desirable car out there, no matter how much you spend. You've got a cracking car already. But do what you think is right. Tizzy
All I would say is, good car that the GTi is, it doesn't begin to compare to a Boxster to drive - not even close. Also bear in mind that Boxster's depreciate comparatively slowly so it will hold it's value better than the golf. Also ownership costs are not that scary - service intervals are every 20K miles and as I posted elsewhere, my Boxster was much cheaper to run than my old S4! Muppetboy
I'd keep the GTI over the Boxster... having been in yours I thought it was fab with the 18's, leather and COLOUR it just looks the business

Never owned boxster but have had a few when previous car (9) went into dealers. Build quality is excellent someone mentioned the Z4M forget that, go with your heart and enjoy the porsche great car. shao_khan
Having owned and driven numerous VWs and Audis, currently got a new S3 after extensively testing everything comparable. Now if I could have justified the 2 seater the Audi wouldnt have got a look in, it would have been another Boxster, no contest.
twigs972
I would definatly go for the Porsche as my old man used to own a Boxster and the drive was absolutly brilliant. Do you need the space as in the Golf or is space not an issue?
skifly
cheers muppetboy. I have to admit it was when i was posting a photo on Pistonheads classifieds that i realised what the car meant to me, although i thought it was more being a bit sentimental as its the first car i really wanted and saved for etc... Porky's have been in the family for a while and have really loved them in the past, and really enjoyed the drive. As for the 2 seater practicality - ar$e is all i can say. Why cant they have an extending section of the car with a couple of extra seats. Plus carrying waterskis will be a bit of a fecker. But lets be honest - i havent had any of my longer skis in my GTI since sept 2005. The girlfriend has just started driving my car. Obviously i was a bit of a pain when she was driving and made her pretty nervous but I am getting better and she is enjoying driving more esp as she loves driving but living in london has never had a car. Now she feels she would never want to drive a porky as it will be my new pride and joy. But to be honest i want her to drive it, she will love it I know. She also has the poser image of a soft-top porka which i also dont like but cant avoid really. I am not fussed if it is a soft top or not... it just drives so well and sounds so good!!! I dont know how to get past that and have to admit i still havent been on a test drive with the roof down. So the general concensus is that i am just being a bit of a plum and letting myself get attached to what really is only a car!!?? Or am i right in having doubts and as muppetboy says I should be happy with the car i have which i admit is great...!?!?!?
