PS3 or not to PS3?

I do like a gadget. So i was thinking, is the PS3 worth buying now, as really, there doesnt seem to be many quality games released at the moment.

I can get a decent package from play.com for 400quid which gives a console, hdmi lead, controller and a blu-ray dvd, but i cant seem to find a decent game.

I do like the idea of high def dvd's, as i have just bought a new tv and cinema system.

So should i wait for Grand Theft Auto in October or just be done with it now, a great dvd player but with no games. pengy.gif

Are there enough films on Bluray you want to watch, to justify having £400 sitting under your TV for 4 months?

If GTA is the only game that interests you, why not purchase the PS3s main competitor, which will also have GTA, and will save you £100 or more??

Because he doesn't want one that dies when it gets warm? tongue.gif

Maxyboy, don't get the PS3 yet. If it's going to sit there till GTA comes out, you might as well wait.

Yeah, exactly.

Altho, I disagree with people saying there aren't any decent games out yet, there are quite a few out there 169144-ok.gif

There are decent games, but you'll tend to get 360 owners saying there aren't as they don't look for them obviously.

I don't know what people expect from a new console. MS had the same problem, as did the PS2 when it launched and now look at it.

Sony have announced upto 39 titles due this year and early 2008 so hold on till Oct. Console might be a tad cheaper then anyway.

You forget one rather large thing. Around 50% of the PS3s launch titles had already been released on the 360, and of them a number were actually better on the 360 due to the lack of online features in some of the early games.

The 360 did have its fair share of PS2 ports, but with the online, and HD, there was sufficiant reason to purchase them on a 360, where theres none on PS3.

a door stop

a step for small children to use when brushing their teeth

a fitness device when wrapped around your ankle

a burglar deterrant - they hurt when thrown

a pretty ornament on the window sill

a paperweight

a water heater (fill bath with cold water, insert ps3, turn on and wait)

the list is endless...

feckin fanboys.

Buy whichever console has the games you want to play on it, ultimately the hardware doesn't mean jack.

Having a black or a white piece of electronics under your TV won't cause you any joy whatsoever, playing the games on it will.

If you really REALLY want Blu-ray then the PS3 does make the cheapest player at the moment, and a fairly good one at that, but otherwise look at what console has the games you want to play and get that.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 on the Nintendo DS is superb, most engaging game I've played this year.

Bit of a slog but worth it.

On older consoles, id agree, but today with XBL, PSN, PS-Home, etc, the choice of console is not just based on games, its the multi media experience, the online experience, etc.

We may have the same debate over and over again (because Sparky is wrong grin.gif ), but hey, thats the point in forums???

Fanboys??? What the hell does that mean? Have i just been insulted?? ROLLEY~14.GIF

I have never dipped my toes in this part of the forum before so if this thread is covering old ground then i am sorry. Not much mind you, but none the less. wink.gif

The PS3 is the latest isnt it, does that not mean its the one to have? It would look fine under the rest of my sony gear, the blu-ray appeals, the games will be picking up and i really fancy the online gaming, to liven things up.

No, you've not, Maxyboy, others have as they don't understand the friendly banter between me (who's right) and Snail (who's wrong) about which console is better. grin.gif

To answer your question, the PS3 is the newer unit, but doesn't make it the one to have. Despite what Thorburn says, the consoles are very different and I believe the true power of the PS3 will come out as developers learn how to get the most from it. Even Sony admitted it's harder to initially pick up, but the rewards are greater.

Where does this fit in with you? Well all depends on what sort of games you're into really, and if you are happy to buy a machine that will only get better (PS3) or one that has more games for it (360) but has reliability issues (still not sorted the ring of death on new units).

Both play games well, the Sony has more kit inside and is more of an investment for later. I put my money into a PS3 as overall, once games are sorted (which they are tending to), the PS3 will be an overall better entertainment system, and as a PSP owner, it made more sense too.

What sort of games are you into?

I have been into shoot-em-ups and the GTA range of games. I am not really a massive gamer, as time doesnt allow, but the odd times when i am left twiddling my thumbs i think a quick blast on a PS3 would do just fine. And as you say it will only get better, and the blu-ray thing and being vain, the rest of my entertainment system is sony, so it would look pretty cool. Not the best pic but you get the idea. beerchug.gif1177014-CIMG0660%28Medium%29.JPG

No you weren't insulted Maxy because you asked a reasonable question. Snail and Sparky would easily qualify as fanboys as both argue vociferously for one console over the other, to the point where it sounds like they are on Microsoft and Sony's payrolls. While it may be a running joke between the two it does get tiring to slog through and can be an obstruction when a third party like yourself wants unbiased opinion.

From what you say, I would think a PS3 might be your best bet. Being a fairly serious gamer I can't imagine buying a console to match other equipment but from the picture you posted I would imagine you like your movies (Big screen, surround sound) and you mentioned that BluRay is appealing. If that's the case then the PS3 is your best bet. Resistance: Fall of Man is a decent shooter and if you can't wait for GTA IV you could try Saint's Row, which is a GTA clone.
