martininwillerby
Hi all... been contemplating trading in the GTi for something a bit more economicall. Like a A4 TDI 170 Special Edition. So off I went to the local dealer. He can back with a trade value of £15650. Bit of a shocker to be honest...... The car is not 2 yrs old yet and has only covered 11700 miles. Spec is 5 door, DSG incl multi s/w, met black, leather, armrest, 18" monza's, iPod connection and 50% film tints (all round). My question is what are others getting........ I was thinking around £18000 or am I been a bit silly....... any comments welcome. Martininwillerby
Snoopy
You should get about £16500 trade in for that spec/ miles etc imo, if the cars mint and on an 05 plate. I think it will be the tint thats putting them off.
newblackGTi
I'm in same boat... Mine has just gone 2 years old. 25000 miles, black, 5 door, sunroof, leather, xenons, 18's, armrest, DVD sat nav... Best offer £16000 - worst offer £14250! Think i will have to dig deeper than originally thought!
Snoopy
£16K for yours is not a bad deal due to the miles, actually its about spot on. Again mods can put dealers off the superchip will put alot off.
Snoopy
Always remember that dealers often sweeten a deal to make you feel good by giving you more for your part ex rather than giving you money off the new car so it always depends on what your buying and what margin they have to play with on the new car on what they offer over book, They may also offer more if they have a buyer looking for a car like yours. Irnbrukid
Martin That price is pretty low hope you are getting 2K of the A4 to go with that price. What about the great GTI residuals.
Ian_C
[ QUOTE ] I was thinking around £18000 or am I been a bit silly....... [/ QUOTE ] Yes!! Oh and remove the front tints if you are going to dealers and asking for a trade in. 50% tint is illegal forward of the A pillar in the UK, hence they will have to rectify if they want to retail on their forecourt. Can be a messy job, hence they will just bargain you down. Ian

thedude74
sell private - you will never get a good price from a dealer, if you are pushed, sell p/ex to an audi dealer - they have got significant margins to give away especially on demo's with low miles. anyway - word of advice , i test drove a 170 bhp A4 and although it was a very nice car the torque was so strong there was way way way too much torque steer , totally ruined the drive. the only way round this was to go quattro but then the mpg goes down to mid 30's which defeated the whole point in going diesel. believe me - i have just sold an audi 140 bhp a4 sline - prob the most boring car i have ever owned .. just my 2pence worth, good luck. RCUK
Trading mine in this weekend - got £17,500 from a VW dealer - 06 plate, 3dr, white, 18's, parking sensors, highline. Best bet is to ring about dealers - was offered £16,800 cash from a dealer.
oxfordlad
Martin - if you want the best value when you sell, private is really the only way.
RedRobin
Martin, what some people do is agree a px price with your dealer for when your next car is ready, but with the proviso that you have the right to sell it privately in the meantime. Then if you haven't sold it in time you can take the px hit but not be inconvenienced by a two car overlap.
Snoopy
I don't think the Audi has them yet but if it was me i would myself be waiting for the new common rail TDIs rather than the current PD ones as there not far off and should be here within 6 months. fresco1
My 5 door TOrnado Red, 18s, Sat Nav etc at 11K from March 2006 was quoted at £19000 by VW dealer recently. It;s worth about £10 at the moment ...
johnnysenna
This is a false economy. You want something more economical to save money on fuel, right? But the money you lose changing cars will be more than you gain on fuel consumption with a diesel A4. Stay with the Golf. You will be quids in overall and you will have a nice car, not a boring one. shao_khan
I agree with Johnny - you will lose money with the trade in, and then with a facelift / revamp of the A4 due then your new car will depreciate heavier so you lose more money, and then when the common rail engines appear you run the risk of a PD losing money also. I'd hang on unless the GTi is killing you every month. With regards to the A4 - ring around, most dealers will have iro 10% on one.
martininwillerby
Thanks for all the comments...... The dealer has been intouch today, to see how I feel about the deal that was put on table. I told him plainly that what if was offering wasn't good enough. £11450 to change..... I told him that I was thinking around £8500 to change, he then indicated that it may be possible if delt before the end of the month. But I'm not fussed to be honest...... When I drove the gti for the first time I knew that I had to have one, then I saw the fifth gear video of plato and the DSG and I had to have one of those aswell. The A4 looks good and delivers the MPG and drives nice, but the seat position and torque steer put me off.... And as my wife keeps telling me when we're out and about.. EVERYBODY JUST LOOKS..... And it's that that I like about the GTI...... So I think I'll be keeping it..... Martininwillerby
martininwillerby
Could always get one of these when they come out........
Snoopy
We quite fancied the new Golf GT too but we were going to wait for the new common rail TDIs.
johnnysenna
Eight and a half grand to change cars!!!!!! You can buy a lot of super unleaded for that. Like I said (sorry for repeating it), buying a diesel car on the grounds it is more economical than the GTI but paying £8.5K to change to the diesel car really doesn't make financial sense. FlashBastd
I know it isn't really rellevant as you have decided to keep your GTi, but my local dealer is retailing an '05 '55' 5dr with 27k and DSG for £16,650. While this is a standard car, i.e. no options other than DSG, it is probably a good reference point.
Simonl
Sometimes it'[s just nice to change though. Economy is always the first excuse used. June is a target month for dealers isn't it? What are the other targets?!? I think they're every quarter IIRC
davyk31
Yes June is usually a target month as its every 3 months but importantly June is also the half year and again there are targets there. Getting a deal done before the end of June for anyone buying a new car can be very advantageous.
