pingpongpo
Been meaning to post something for a while now but keep forgetting. What is the score on foreign people driving their car other here? Theres quite a few Polish cars I have seen who I am fairly sure are here to stay so to speak. Do they pay tax? Do they have to have MOT's? Do they only have to pay a Polish rate of insurance if it is still registered abroad? Can I do the same to cut my bills?
Tizzy
There are loads of Polish, Latvian & Lithuanian cars on the roads of Lincolnshire these days. As far as I know the majority are neither taxed or insured, so steer well clear of them.

pontyslapper
After 6 months they are legally required to be taxed and insured. Quick phone call to the local plod and possibly the DVLA will of course yield bugger all results. Just steer well clear!
wkrzys
I agree, i see lots of (particularly polish) cars around my area, infact theres one parked in my neighbours driveway - i may ask him the very question the majority seem to be in good nick but i do try to steer clear of them for insurance reasons - pro's and cons of having a cheap (and i would say quite good) work force in the UK (nb. however my car is bought and cared for in the UK!) And before the Daily Mail readers sart sounding off, this is the beauty of the EU, we can drive our cars anywhere on the continent on the same terms without hassle. I'm sure the French ask if UK cars are taxed and insured for their roads too, so lets all enjoy being Europeans eh ?

[/ QUOTE ] That's pretty blase thing to say, if those cars stay here under Polish registration, they wont be MOT'd, taxed, and I'm pretty sure they'll let their Polish insurance slip too. What they gonna do if stopped, just pretend they don't speak English. UK cars driven in France are there on a very temporary basis, not permanently exported there! theduisbergkid
IIRC, they can stay here for 6 months before they need to register as a UK car, unless they take it abroad for a short trip, which most folks do. On that basis, they do not have to comply with UK MOT or tax. If they get done for an offence by the police, the cops get a translator, and if convicted they have to get a UK licence with points on. There is no escaping breaking the law on that basis. Why all the fuss ? It also means I can drive my UK on the continent (which i do) without having to dick about with local regs most places in Europe. How many of the UK reg'd chelsea tractors loading up with booze in Calais bother to get a french MOT for example ? We're all europeans now, get used to it !
