shabz_321
hi guys, was hoping for sum advice regarding ecu remap/chipping. i've jus been quoted £250 for an ecu remap on my 110bhp bora and this will result in the bhp being boosted to 145bhp. for the £250 i also get the original cd which i thought was quite cool, and also a guarantee from the guy who says he'll come and sort any problem i have in the first 12months , but i've been scared off my a couple of friends who say that the mpg drops quite considerably and also engine problems are quite common . i was hoping that someone who has had the engine remapped could shed some light on the issue if poss. thanx
shao_khan
HIya. I've had a few remaps now. IMO the main cause for a drop in fuel economy is your own desire to drive it harder, nothing more. My A4 was mapped - 190 - 220 and that resulted in fuel economy rising from 320miles per tank (60l) to 400 miles per tank. similarly my TT and Gold 4 also improved. benjie
I've had no problems with mine. (I think that...) A remap changes the spray pattern and timing of the injectors and the diesel pump (but it's still within tolerances). I don't think your engine will blow up! What might start to give you trouble is your clutch. My mpg had dropped around 50 miles per tank, but that's because I can't help booting it about! Now I'm being more sensible and I got to 535miles last tank, but still had plenty left as the light had only just come on.
Roger_Irrelevant
Noddy question here (but we need to know these things). What do insurance companies think of a remap? Presumably they sting you, but what sort of % hike are we talking about?
Mook
It's based on the increase in power and it depends on your age and convictions etc. Hunt around for quotes if your existing company won't cover you. Whatever you do, you have to tell your insurance company, otherwise your cover will be void and you'll be driving a car without any insurance. benjie
I told mine and all they wanted was a current MOT certificate faxed to them! No increase at all. Don't know anybody else as lucky as me though! Quinn Direct is who I'm with. there's 2 categories - up to 25% bhp increase and more than 25% bhp increase. fizzbitt
Ive just picked up my Bora Sport 115ps 6 speed last night and this thread makes for interesting reading. Silly question here but how would the insurance company find out that the car has had a remap if no parts have been changed? Im not saying that you shouldnt tell them im just wondering in general. Also where do you guys get your remaps done?
Rustynuts
The insurance companies are now using technology based solutions to check if you've had a remap. Thay scan the ECU and compare it to the standard software etc. If you want a good job doing then this place is the way to go. Just south of York so not too far from you.
