DHA
Ok new TV arrives next week and I am thinking about getting a surround sound setup. Am I correct in thinking I need an AV recevier and this will take sound and picture from SKY, xbox and DVD player then connect into the TV and a speaker setup? Or do I need something on top of that. Am not looking to spend a huge amount to be honest so would a denon receiver and some KEF speakers be a way to go?
Andy_Bangle
I've been looking at something like the Yamaha YSP-1100/900 to connect everything up and for a neater installation. http://www.yamaha-uk.com/sound_projectors/?product_id=
CarMad
Sony seem to be winning all the reviews with their new models at the moment so might be worth a look. They are meant to sound good and have loads of features for the money. What budget have you got to spend ? Do you want floor standing speakers or something small ?... DHA
Would prefer something small speakerwise. Budget is in the region of £1000, yes I know not loads but all I am after is a decent sound to accompany the telly.
sidicks
I have the Yamaha YSP-1000 in my GYM and it is good but not fantastic. I have the Denon AVR4306 Amps (one in my lounge and one in my pool room) and these are awesome, although a bit over budget. Some of the cheaper Denon Amps are still great - maybe AVR2307 ? DHA
Yeah I looked at the denon AVR2307 and also had a look at the sony STRDA1200. Which speakers should I be looking at?
sidicks
Personally with this budget, I'd go for something in the KEF 'egg' range! sidicks

scoobs
Try the B&W speaker range. Awesome sound!!
bazza_g
I normally get slated for talking about BOSE stuff but am more than happy with mine for home cinema - it takes up very little space and produces a big sound, exactly what I was looking for

DHA
Have had my BOSE321 for 6 years Bazza and have loved it. Problem is lip sync on flat panels and there is no option to fix this with my BOSE. And I also want HDMI etc to run all audio and pictures throught the one unit. twigs972
Set up my old man's cinema sound with Denon amp with B & W sub woofer and Ruark speakers. Great sound when playing films and just running music through. Did try out BOSE systems and wasn't impressed with the sound quility when the sub woofer turned off and just running the speakers. Waylander
rather than start a new thread can I jump in here? I am tempted by the Panny TH42PX70. I currently have no speaker set-up and was thinking of getting an "all in one" set-up such as the Panny SCPT450 which includes a 5.1 SS speaker set as upscaling dvd player. Now I use my xbox curently as dvd player but I take it I would still need the new panny one to drive the surround sound? At only £210 delivered it seems a bargain. Any other recommendations at this lowly level?
DHA
I think if you haven't heard a more expensive 5.1 setup then the above would be fine. I have ran my bose 321 for 5 years and it seems fine to me (others who have heard it and own full hifi setups slate it) but I now fancy an upgrade to more speakers. Waylander
That was my thought too. I hooked my current dvd player through my 5 year old panny midi tape-deck/cd interchanger/radio and that was fine for us This SCPT450 or the Sony DAV were 2 i was looking at
MOSE
[ QUOTE ] And I also want HDMI etc to run all audio and pictures throught the one unit. [/ QUOTE ] Dave, try one of ther latest Denon receivers that has HDMI switching, then the amp can control all your HDMI sources and adjust automatically what is being used and display that source. The only snag with this is that the audio isnt switchable, even though HDMI can carry the sound. When you get the time, its worth popping along to Audio T in Camberley and having a chat to the guys in there. They have got a few receivers set up in their demo room that have HDMI switching, and you can then see for yourself how well this works.
DHA
Cool, might pop over that way. There are a few places in Guildford too so I might pop over and see what they have for demos
