wiseman405
Hi there, Will soon be thinking about getting my son a polo for his first car. He is going to buy him self a new set of wheels for it. Now he likes the look of the Classic TT wheel 17inch (charcol colour) But he has since seen some 18inch wheels, (the TT sport wheels) Would they fit, or would they be far to big. He understands that the car will have to lowered. Thanks Tom

Si_GTi
[ QUOTE ] What model polo is it? [/ QUOTE ] As above - if you can tell us the age of the car or stick a pic up, its a lot easier to advise I am guessing you are talking of the Polo mk6, a.k.a the '9n'. Made from 2002 until last year (2006) its the model that has twin headlights on the front? If it is a 9n then 17"s or 18"s will fit under the arches with no trouble at all and a subtle drop will finish things off nicely. Eibach springs mated to the standard dampers would be a good place to start! Cheers
wiseman405
Thanks for the replies. Yes it will be the 9N Hoping to get a 1.4tdi, and chip it up. I am suprised 18's will fit. I like the look of the black replicas from the TT shop. http://www.thettshop.com/wheels.asp?cat=2006&product=701483 Also, will just the springs on there on with the VW dampers be ok, i.e: it wont put strain or anything like that on the dampers or car. Obviously he would prefer just to buy the springs (cheaper ) but will the car be ok with it. Could i be cheeky and ask for a link to the springs that would be suitable for the car. Thanks in advance Tom
Si_GTi
Re 18s on a 9n, check this out: Belongs to a guy on uk-polos.net who has in fact recently sold it I believe. He is/was running 18" alloys with a 45mm drop with no scrubbing or clearance issues. I'll check out the springs later today but if you are going anything up to a -40mm drop, Eibach springs and standard OEM dampers will be OK. In fact I think the Eiback sport springs were listed as an official accessory when the 9n was launched? The alternative of course is coilovers but these wil cost upwards of £300... wiseman405
Thanks for the quick reply, and the amazing picture! That is awsome! Really looks the business. So will the 1.4TDI 100bhp be able to handle the drag/weight of the big wheels? (might be a silly question but...) Thanks Tom
Oli
They look more like 17's
Tarmac_Terrorist
Whoah....Carlos Fandango! The car looks so much improved on bigger rims.

[/ QUOTE ] Yup you'll be OK. Plenty of torque on tap! But seriously, keep close to the original rolling radius and you'll be laughing. 16"s are fitted as standard to some models IIRC, so I can't see a set of 17"s or 18"s causing any noticeable problems in reduction of performance. wiseman405
Thanks for the replies. I am hoping the 18's will fit. I will ask at the TT shop when i go down, or i can give them a call and see what they think. Thanks for all your help Tom
wiseman405
Actually just been loking at your new thread Si GTI. And that is a tempting look. maybe a more mordern look though. Do they fit straight onto the polo, or are spacers needed? Thanks Tom
Si_GTi
My "summer look" thread? Those are BBS RM012s originally from a Golf G60 Edition One if I remember the details of the eBay advert correctly. They are fitted to my car "as is", with no spacers. I like them but some have said that the style of the wheel, although excellent in its own right, is not suited to the more modern lines of the GTi. I am not certain that they are available in a fitment that would suit the Polo 9n though? But some other styles of BBS alloys would be worth investigating I'll have a dig about and see what I can come up with Cheers
wiseman405
thanks Si! I like the modern BBS, but they are very expensive for my son. I mean if he were to get BBS i suppose to save money it would have to be a smaller wheel? http://www.performancealloys.com/results_search.asp?procedure=wheels_by_car Tom
Mouse
Max size wheels for a Polo imo: 16" for a 6N(Mk4)/6N2(Mk5) 17" for a 9N(Mk6)/9N3(Mk7) You can pull off an inch bigger if you get the ride height correct
