Golf GT PD TDi - Intermittant Speedo Fault

This intermittant fault has been going on for some months now and seems to be perplexing both VW specialist garages and independent garages alike so I've turned to Tyresmoke to see if a wider audience may be able to shed some light on this irritating problem.

The speedo on my 99/00 V-plate Golf can suddenly and without warning stop working. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm on a motorway, B-road, or trundling into town shopping, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I can be cruising at 70mph on the motorway with the needle showing 70 when it will dip to 10 and then fluctuate wildly anywhere on the dial! Sometimes, on starting up, it just refuses to work at all... I've had to resort to using my husband's RoadAngel to give me an accurate and sustainable speed reading but it seems all mechanics and garages we've been to are at an absolute loss. It doesn't help of course that the fault is intermittant - pound-to-a-pinch-of-salt it's working when they look at it!

Anyway, that's pretty much it; those are the symptoms - does anyone please have any advice or pointers as to what might be going wrong so I can get it fixed?? It's doing my head in!!!! On the plus side, when the speedo isn't working nor are there miles going on the clock!!!

Any help please?
