[Audi A3/S3] Another S3 joins the road

Finally picked up my new S3 last Thursday. Am I happy with my new toy? Definitely!

I used Select Automotive to arrange the logistics and deal with the German dealer. I ended up with a £3500 saving compared with the list price. This is less than the £4000 I had hoped for, but due to the weakening pound, the saving reduced week after week. It didn’t help with the car taking 22 weeks to come from placing the order (I was initially quoted 12-16). As for Select, they delivered an immaculate car. I was a bit disappointed that I had to keep asking them for information rather than them sending me it in anticipation of needing it, and it took 3 weeks from my money being received by the German dealer to the car being available to pick up. I’m pretty sure I could have done better, especially as I paid £500 for this service. The pick up was brisk, hand over the money, sign the form, look over the car and away you go. Not the ceremony you get at a main dealer and definitely no flowers, token gifts or gestures.

As for the car, I love it. I have done 1003 miles in three days including a trip to Goodwood FoS yesterday and consider it fully run in. Had loads of options on the car, all are good but some stand out. The sun roof is fantastic. It has a tint which makes the sky look deep blue and adds light to the cabin. I would definitely recommend. The DVD sat nav is also a must. If you didn’t spec it then it’s a very worthwhile retrofit. The auto dimming mirrors have a nice tint. I also specified folding but I’m not sure if I’ll use this feature much. Cruise control is also a must in any car. The BOSE stereo is good but not exceptional. No highs, no lows, must be BOSE! Shame you can’t spec the B&O system you get in the S5.

Did I make the right choice? Yes. Would I spec anything differently? No. Job done!

Thanks,

The sunroof reduces headroom by about 4cm. It should only be a problem if you are close to 7ft. No, I didn't go for the buckets, just standard seats. I didn't even go for lumbar support. After 1000 miles I have no complaints. They are perfectly comfortable. Actually thinking about it, during agressive cornering a bit more support may not come amiss, that's when the buckets will come into their own. Also, I'm not totally convinced about the dimple effect but thats personal taste. It's not something I'll lose sleep over.

Another thing I didn't mention. My car is better than the one I demoed. Brakes and steering have more feel. I would still like more feel in the steering but give me another couple of thousand miles and I'll have recalibrated my driving style to compensate.

Oh, and another thing, maybe the current owners could comment. I've noticed that the car is quicker and keener if you sustain a period of pressing on rather than cruise and squirt. Maybe just me?

Nordscleife in two weeks. Can't wait!

P.S. Don't forget to post your impressions of the car when you get it.

Yes, but I won't be hammering it. I'll be driving within my and the cars limits. It's my first visit to the ring so I have no experiance of it other than watching Top Gear and You Tube videos.

Following it up the following day with a visit to Spa for the F1 test.
