Panasonic TH42Px70 or Samsung PS42Q97HDX?

The Samsung is about £100 cheaper than the Panny (£650 vs £760 from Dixons) but will have to check if the Panny price includes stand!

Panny has excellent review for both SD and HD. Samsung is the new kid on the block also with good reviews if apparantly not quite on a par with the panny?

I bought the Panny PX70

Managed to get: This Package + pedestal stand for £999

All from JL. 5yr free guarantee on TV, 2yr on the DVD recorder.

That was back when the DVD recorder was free, and I also got a price match of £99 quid back.

Havent really used it yet, past messing about. But it was chosen after months of reading up on AV forums and help/advice from gIzzE

Panasonic PX70.

I'm intrigued on what basis you're so definitive about it.

The Px70 is definately a superb screen but the Samsung Q97 is the new kid on the block, has rave reviews for HD and SD picture quality as well and is about £100 cheaper...

Well I had a long play with the new Samsung on Sunday, friend had one at his house, and it is so, so, so much better than previous versions. However there are two problems, first the blacks, they are much deeper than before but there is a sort of black hole effect, it is like you know there is info missing, I know the same scene on my Panny and although there is no info there you never feel like it may be missing, so you don't notice it.

The other problem is motion, and for me this makes it a complete no go, quite simply it blurs, there is a smooth motion driver option but this just makes it even worse.

All in all if it wasn't for these problems it would be a good set, and at the price it is a good set, however the fact the Panasonic is now only £100 more makes the choice a no brainer.

Another problem but I think that might just be because it is new, is skin tones don't look right, it has the 'waxy' effect, but then so did my PX70 at first and that went after 50 odd hours. But worth mentioning. My mate admits the overall image from his PW7 (480p screen) is better, but he liked the features and design of the Samsung so thought he would give it a go.

I have actually got rid of my PX70, best all in one TV I have onwed, but not quite as good as my PHD8. But I did love it.

I had a faulty 37" (power supply) and then the 42" was used and had screen burn.

So after a refund I had a go with a Samsung 40M87, however I just can't live with it, with a nice bright HD clip it looks awesome, with the PS3 it looks awesome, but it is so far behind the Panny plasma for SD material, sport and general image enjoyment I took it back today. Sorry LCD owners, still not doing it for me. frown.gif

My Pioneer 428XD will be here this week and I am going to put the PHD plasma in the conservatory, seems silly to sell it for what? £600? and replace it with a £900 PX70 or similar.

Fair enough. The only real criticism I had read was that some people didnt like the ultrabright coating Samsung have added to the screen. I was planning to compare the 2 side by side at Currys and I guess I will had to ensure show something fast-moving to assess this blurring .

My next problem is sourcing!

At Dixons I can get:

Samsung for £699 delivered [less £50 current deal less 5% cashback for buying on Egg ie ~£610] but 1 yr Warranty

Panny for £810 (with the pedestal stand) [less £50 less 5% Egg ie ~£720] with 1 yr warranty

Empire Direct have the Samsung at £799 with 3 yr warranty

and the Panny at £799 (panel only; with pedestal is £899) with a 5 yr warranty.

They are £100 more at John Lewis.

Not sure if Empire Direct Price Matches but I don;t think JL with PM Dixons anymore [as it is now online only] so need to find a good price for the Panny for JL to PM!

I can tell you now, in store you will probably find the Samsung more impressive, it is brighter and under store lights this also makes it look more snappy and tricks you into thinking the blacks are darker.

I don't think you would be unhappy with either and to be honest you would have to live with both to notice where the Panny excels.

Thanks gIzzE.

You have got me all in a quandry now!

Both AFAIK are excellent plasmas [the quality of the Panny is beyond question IMO esp for SD].

We will be mainly watching SD on it when it arrives [dont have Sky HD] but the comment you made about blurring on the Samsung is nagging me. Could you expand on that please. What situations is it noticable in?

How does SD footy look on it?

Cheers dude.

The £100 I could save would help towards the surround sound setup/upscaling dvd player you see.

It happens when watching things like sport, or anything where the screen starts to pan, the whole thing blurs slightly with a slight judder.

You need to go and see it for yourself, it is difficult to explain.

I am so used to the panasonics handling of sd and sport that using anything else is very hard, already people are reporting the new Pioneers don't handle non film material as well as the Panasonic. I guess if you haven't owned one before you may let it off. Personally when the Panny was £1500 and the Samsung was £900 I still said it was worth the extra, with only £100 in it I can't see why anyone would buy the Samsung.

The Panny is not perfect, but it gets the main things right, natural colours, motion handling, black levels and inputs etc.

Riz, you need to pop into JL on a regular basis as they sell off quite a few ex display tvs fairly cheaply.

Also suggest you take some of your own dvd's to try on various makes so you know what to expect and see whether your getting any improvement in the picture.

Yeah, on the old one there was even a demo mode which split the screen in half showing one half with it on and the other half with it off, and the half with it off always looked so, so, so much better, but the funny thing was you couldn't turn it off!! Idiots!!
