chasdrury
Posting on behalf of my sister really... She has got a 56 plate A3 Sportback, and the ECON light came on the air con and wouldn't go off. She went to the dealers in London and they said there was a stone gone through the compressor and charged her £70 for looking at it, and then quoted £550 to fix it. We have had several Audis - A3's & A4s (8) and never had anything go through the compressor - is it something that is heard of on this chasis, and is £550 reasonable? Cheers Chaz
Vic
A stone wouldn't go through the compressor unless it was shaped like a bullet and going at the same speed! .A stone could though go through the condensor which is like a small radiator behind the front grille. These, like radiators, should be tough enough to withstand stone impacts though could come to grief against some of the other debris that you see flying around our roads nowadays. Sounds like she's been unlucky, enquire whether is's possible to have the condensor repaired.

S3Rob
ChasDrury, have you had experience with the dealers before, are they reputable? I know that they've been having problems with a/c compressors on A3's and they've been coming through from the factory broken in some cases. Not saying this dealership are wrong but I wondered whether somewhere else it would be a warranty job instead.
Booster
I was wondering the same thing after my problems with my a/c compressor. If she has to have a new one I hope that they are no longer on back order: Mine took nearly 8 weeks!!
chasdrury
Thanks guys It's Bexley Audi - no experience myself, we use the dealers in Sheffield - I think a couple of Tyresmokers use Bexley though (Daz?) Anyway, I have had her read the quote to me. It says to supply and fit new Aircon Compressor, labour £287.50 Parts: Condenser - £180-72 Part No. A1K0820411P Washers - 4p So, they are replacing the compressor, but the part is the condenser! WTF! I assume it's the condenser and they have made a typo. Can someone check that part number and see if it is a condenser or compressor.... Vic
I think a Compressor would come in at about £600 so it must be the condensor that's punctured. Does the dealer know his arse from his elbow?!

Chrisg
and I thought compressors were nearer to £1k. What about an Air Com specialist When I was about to get my A3 ( OK 7 years ago!) a place in Woking quoted £1300 to fit air, complete, just like if the factory had done it - but I found a car with it already fitted. iceman2002_uk
I've heard Whetstone Audi in London to be good, I think they're located around the Wembley area.
