mk 4 golf gti 1.8 20valve white smoke issue

i have just dropped a gti lump into my mk4, and upon running the engine for a good hour i have a constant plume of white smoke. the smoke is not thick it is more like a condensation which smells rich in petrol. i dont think its the head gasket as the oil looks ok and the coolant level does not drop. however the car was ticking over for an hour and the fan did not kick in once and temperature remained a steady 90, car does sound a bit ropey too. cheers
