GTI's past & present

I had the call yesterday to say mine will be built in week 43 & started to think back on my previous VW’s. I’m interested to see if we have many GTI owners out there who have stayed close to the brand. I’ve dipped out a couple of times but have kept coming back.

So far my VW story is:

3dr black Mark 2 GTI 8v -Fantastic all-round car. Wished I had big bumpers

5dr black Leon Cupra R - Just not a Golf. Spongy 6spd box & 18” alloys that loved to tramline

3dr black Mark 3 VR6 - Great engine but it was a bit long in the legs when i got it.

3dr black Mark 4 GTI 180- Really disappointed. VW seemed to think that by making the suspension rock hard constitutes a sports car

3dr Steel grey Mark 5 GTI on order Fingers crossed

Anyone interested in some old school GTI reminiscing? Maybe Mark 1 with small lights!!!!!

2006 VW MK5 GOLF GTI: My current car, love it to bits, saved up for it for 3 years+

2000 VW MK4 GOLF GTI: Despite the high miles, they car did its job, not a patch on the current car, but was a good change from a 1.3 engine! - looked the part too.1996 VW

POLO 1.3 L: Great little car, handled well like a go kart, no powr steering, got me through 2 years of uni!1990 VW

GOLF 1.3 L: My first car! everyone loves their first car, freedom at last - this car was a tank! tiny little engine in a huge bay but it did its job. I won't mention the bass tube made from a thames water tube and various amps etc etc ;-)

1989 Gti 8v 3 Door Red Big Bumper version - I put some Hockenhiem alloys on it and lowered it. Quick car, awesome front end stability for a hot hatch and top brakes until they got too warm, which was every day. Remember it feeling very heavy and a bit of a drone on a motorway, but still more fun to drive on the limit that the Mk5.

1997 Corrado VR6 Storm. That was one seriously over-rated car. I thought it was Boring with a capital B. It kept getting rated as the best fwd car going, but I found everything to be just engineered bias towards 'grand touring'. It was quick but not stunning, no more grip than the 8v Gti and god I hated the beige leather after about a month! Storm spec was a rip off. Good motorway muncher, thats about it.

2006 Gti Mk5 - best car for £20000 on the planet if you ask me. It puts all its rivals to shame in an overall sense. Superb DSG, interior and chassis set up. Great look and feel that you are in a class car when your driving it. Feels fun and sporty on tip toes and can do the M1 like its a merc. I just find the 4 cylinder lump not quite adult enough sometimes, but no one could seriously ever NEED a quicker car than this, for everyday use. (Although we all WANT a quicker car!). Best GTI - even better than the original. Can't beleive I'm about to sell it for a BMW 330i M Sport Touring!
