Simonl Posted October 29, 2007 Report Share Posted October 29, 2007 I had my X3 valeted at the weekend. The valeter said his jet-spray dislodged a bit of paint on one of my 19"s, causing it to peel. Underneath there was more silver, albiet not as shiny/glossy. He seems to think the wheel has been refurbed (hence the silver paint peeling). As i bought the car used, i have no idea. The car is only an 06, so if it hasn't been refurbed i presume it's covered by the warranty, if it has been then i'm obviously looking at a repair. Has anyone heard of this happening on BMW alloys, or is it a know fault with reconditioned alloys?!? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

BWM wheels are on the whole poor, my 530d (as with many BMW's) had the wheel nuts go rusty. Not only does it look bad but the rust damages the clearcoat in where the nut goes. You see quite a few older cars with lots of bubbling, AMG alloys seem to be prone to it as well. Sounds to me like maybe this alloy was touched up rather then dropped in stripper and repainted/finished from the ground up. That was a pretty valeter guy. Jet spraying on its own can take off paint, mix that with acid wheel cleaners and you get a disaster but i doubt thats why your alloy paint is damaged. In most cases in the UK the wheel is just metal, primed, sprayed with grey paint (or other colour) then clear coated. If you kerb the wheel you remove the paint, water, road grime, salt etc, penetrates the exposed metal and then works its way in to and under the paintwork. Were there any signs of degradation before he cleaned them?? You know this sounds like clearcoat failure on the wheel, if the wheel dident go a whitie colour or start to look dull before hand prehapes it was your valeter. So to speak, detailers correct me if im wrong, but paint wont be fine one day and then bad the next thru natural causes. Maybe your valeter used the wrong mixture of wheel cleaner on them!? You've not had your car long and refurbished or not, it obviously doesn't meet with expectations. IIRC you bought it from a BMW dealer? If that's the case then I would expect them to sort it regardless. If you bought it from an independent dealer then my expectations would be somewhat lower.
