mickymunn
Hi all, just looking at buying an 04 2.0 GT TDI from a VW dealers, really like the car has all the extra's and only 28,000 on the clock but have a question id really like help with please. I've never owned a car with a turbo before and dont think ive been in many that have, but i took this one out for a test drive the other day and i know that turbo's make whistling noises but im not sure when they are supposed to. When i was driving this one it seemed to make a noise when i think i took my foot off the gas or either when i gently put my foot back on the gas (cant remember now) The noise was a kinda whistle kinda squeak (dest way i can describe) but it wasnt loud as was trying to listen hard for any noises when out on the test drive. I mentioned this to the sales guy and he said that it was just the turbo. Then next day he called and told me the mechanic's had checked it out and said it was fine, just the turbo and that some you can hear slightly and some you cant. Sorry for the long post guys but can any of you guys gimme some peace of mind that it all sounds ok? looking to pick it up next week and im v excited about it. Its a VW dealer so it comes with 12 months warranty Thanks
Rustynuts
Whistle is good, whining isn't. When you put your foot on the go pedal very slightly you can hear the turbo whistle rise as it picks up speed.
mickymunn
Hiya its not a whining, really hard to describe maybe even a whistling mooing? lol ????

Rustynuts
Mine sounds like a very quiet owl hiding in the engine bay sometimes.
mickymunn
So you think its the norm then? Im just really unsure as ive never owned a car with a turbo before. Also im sure the turbo would be covered by warranty if anything ever did go wrong, but hopefully it never will lol
Rustynuts
Well, it's not the same noise as my previous 1.9 tdi, but I don't think it's a noise which is going to develop into an expensive one.
mickymunn
Covered under warranty though you think?
Rustynuts
Yep, it should be.
mickymunn
Found on another forum it could be turbo vanes fouling the turbo casing???? what ever they are? and thats not good???? HELP
Rustynuts
Nah, that's not the noise mine's making. There's no mechanical noise with mine, just a noise of something moving very fast through the air.
mickymunn
what kind of noise do "turbo vanes" make then? anyone know? rusty?
Rustynuts
Take a look at this page. It'll help you understand how your turbo works. The vanes move slowly to the open and closed position, and once there they stay there (as in they're not moving constantly). I don't think the noise you're describing is the vanes catching as that would be a mechanical noise (metal against metal). Unless someone's talking about the actual turbine or compressor wheels, as that would be a major problem. But that would be a shrieking mechanical noise getting higher in pitch as the engine accelerated. You'd know about that.
mickymunn
Hey rusty got your hello on the other one lol When should the turbo kick in on this car, dove it again today and it made the noise between 1800 rpm and 2500rmp
Rustynuts
1750 rpm is about when the turbo kicks in.
mickymunn
So guess im over reacting then and everythings fine?
Rustynuts
You could ask for a test drive in another one and compare the noise, as it's very unlikely they'll have 2 cars in with the same fault on the turbo. I don't think it's an issue though, and like you say it's got a years warranty. Just ask the sales staff to confirm that the turbo is warranty covered and I wouldn't worry. Srcoates
I had a turbo replaced on my 2.0 GT TDI under warranty 6 months ago. Basically it was making a loud whistling sound, which there was no way you couln't notice if the radio was off, but it wasn't an alarming sound at all. Not one that would ring any alarm bells. I then started to go into limp mode with the turbo over presssuring. As soon as they changed the turbo it was quiet as a mouse and could only be heard when actually listened for. Ultimately it is covered under warranty, and needn't necessarily be a problem. Like Rusty says, take another for a trest drive... I would emphasise though that the noise of my first turbo couldn't be missed, but I really have to listen to hear the new one which is mainly audiable when it is spooling up. mickymunn
Got the car, v pleased with it but im going to take it down to my local dealer this weekend to see what they say. Rustynuts
I think there's something about the door mirrors making a noise, but can't remember what. I think it was documented on here by someone.
benjie
I think I read that too, isn't there some kind of resonation at around 60mph?
Srcoates
Some people on here have said it is the gap between the mirror casing and the indicator lens... But I have tried siliconing this and it hasn't removed the wind noise... I have just learnt to put up with it now, but I guess that isn't the answer you were chasing! Coatsey's where abouts are you in northampton?
Srcoates
I am in Duston... Don't get a 'wobble' as such, just the normal diesel 'chugging'!
