pritesh
Hi all, have an issue here....Friday evening..was making good progess down the A1 from up north, I had to touch the brakes during my journey and out of no where my dash flashed "STOP, BRAKE FAULT, SERVICE MANUAL". This dissapeared after a few seconds and has not re-appeared. I pulled over at a service statation and checked the car over... Brake Fluid - OK I even resorted to taking each wheel off to check the pads and brake pipes. All are ok. I checked the car on Sat for leaks etc and found nothing. I have since tested the brakes fully and all is functional. SO needless to say...im confused...and concerned slightly... can anyone help me out here? Car: Passsat 1.8T 20V Sport Tip, 2002 51 plate, with 70K on the clock. Cheers P
cruiser647
Possibley a faulty Brake Light Switch. On the diesels, it makes the glowplug light flash. Next time it happens, check to see if your brake lights come on.

Yazz
Hi, Its seems that we both have the same car with the same problem? i have been told to check the brake fluid levels, sensors, brake bulbs. VW are telling me it is the ABS module breaking down and the pump? i am facing a bill of around £1400 Sat.....However i am taking it to get all the above checked first tomorrow....i will keep you updated! Good Luck Yazz
alijav
Possibley a faulty Brake Light Switch. On the diesels, it makes the glowplug light flash. Next time it happens, check to see if your brake lights come on. i dont think it has anything to do with brake switch as my car (52 reg passat 1.9tdi sport) has had the "stop, brake fault, service manual" problems for over 6months now, and in the last 2 weeks i've developed the flashing glow plug + abs light + esp light warning light to come on, the glow plug light came on within 30secs of switching the car on, however ABS light and ESP light would come on stay on after i'd press the brake pedal once, the ESP and ABS would not work whilst these light were on. i would turn the car off whilst on the move and switch it back on straight away, all lights would go off, the glow plugs light would come back on in around 30 secs and the ABS + ESP lights would when i'd press the brake pedal. i had the brake switch fitted in all warning light problems resolved (glow plug, ESP + Brakes) btw during the time my brake switch was faulty the brake lights would not work either, but they work perfectly. HOWEVER THE STOP!, BRAKE FAULT! SERVICE MANUAL PROBLEMS EXISTS, THEREFORE IT IS NOT LINKED TO THE BRAKE SWITCH.
pontyslapper
Ali, I can be pretty sure that your fault will be the switch under the brake pedal - I had the same as you on my '04 passat. Is that the one that was changed - if so, by who. There are two types of switch - both need to be fitted in virtually opposite ways to each other or the fault persists. The other thing to check is your bulbs in the light clusters - they might seem fine but one might be at fault and that causes the dash to light up! My money is on the switch under the brake pedal - I did mine myself - cost about £8 for the part, plus about 30 minutes of heavy language and a print of the brake pedal on my forehead!!! Have a read of the following and the link to VWVortex in the thread. http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/vw-passat/121174-brake-lights-not-working-try.html
