Front Seat dilemma

Was wondering if there had been any new ideas over the seat back issue. Johnnysenna did you get extra padding put in?

Drove my car for the first time in 3 weeks and the back pain resurfaced after an hours driving. Going to try and get a thin cushion, but if that doesn't help, I might look at the TT...

The car is booked in at the trimmers a week tomorrow. They understand what I want. They are going to charge me £60 including VAT to add padding discretely to my lumber/lower thoracic area. They warned me it might take them a couple goes to get right. We are only talking about a tiny slivver of padding I believe, like a folded jumper in terms of depth of padding. I'll let you all know.

May have it solved. I've cut up a couple of seat cushions used on plastic garden furniture (approx 25mm thick). One goes across the back to pad out the middles spine area and the second is a wedge on the base, as I noticed the seat bases are pretty steep . Material is green & white stripes which is very fetching!!!!

Was going to put them in black material but off to Peru so will leave as is.

I sat in the new S3 with Recaros. All I can say is that they are built for small people, so it might be the same for MK5's.

My car is going into the trimmers tomorrow. I went there today for a chat/planning and I settled on a slivver of sponge 1/2-3/4 inch thick. This will be about a foot square in shape and placed almost at the bottom of the seat back, say starting 4 inches up from your arse. Hopefully the work will be neat.

Thanks to everyone that has replied to this thread.

I love this car, but the seat problem is really annoying. I'm driving to the Geneva motor show in March and thats going to be 3hrs each way and I'm dreading it. My friend drove last year so its my turn. Was thinking the only way I'm going to survive this is with a packet of nurofen.

I'm going to try your solution Small block. I've got similar seat cushions but in white thankfully and i'll just hang it from the metal bar of the head rest.

Good luck johnnysenna, really hope it works.

Right fellas, just back from the trimmers.

It is almost perfect now. We used a 1/2-3/4 inch thick bit of foam about a foot square (or less) and it fits into the bottom third-ish of the seat back.

It stops dead at one the seams mid way up your back, which was the plan all along, i.e. it HAS TO finish at one of the horizontal seems.

However, slight fly in the ointment, I can feel a step/ridge in the middle of my back where the foam edge finishes. I am going to ask the guys to take it out and try to cut the foam so that it has a rounded or sloping edge, not a square edge. This should make matters perfect.

Cosmeticaly the job looks great. With the naked eye you can notice that there is a slight fullness in the cushion of the lower back, but you barely notice it. They don't do much in the way of stitching either. The fabric is held on fasteners deeper within the seat. I thought they would have had a fancy handheld sewing maching or something, but that isn't how it works.

It's a pity it isn't 100% sorted yet, but it shows that it can be done, so I am happy next time it will be spot on. Might be a while before I have a day off where I can book it in though.

Johnny,

Any chances of some pictures when your finished.

I also think theres also an issue with the decline on the base part of the seat. Its probably added to stop children scooting of the seat.

I've seen a few car seat wedges, but I would be interested to know if your trimmer has every come across that sort of mod.

Hope the fix keeps you in the golf longer than the porsche!!

I don't know about the decline on the base part of the seat I'm afraid.

In terms of pictures, they would show anything useful at all. You can barely see the difference the padding has made with the naked eye, let alone on a photo. The improvement made is something you feel in your back rather than see.

Mind you, I thought the padding might have been a little too much today!! Early days, I will see how it goes over the next month and then return to the trimmers as required.

  • 2 weeks later...

Im interested and concerned to read about this as it seems that several people have an issue with the ED30 seats.

One of the reasons Im looking to get a golf with DSG is that I have back pain and pain in my left arm/leg so wanted an automatic with comfy seats.

I was originally looking at TDis, then decided I would be happier with a GTi, and latterly I have been considering the ED30 if I can get on e at the right price.

Do people have the same issues with the std GTi, and does this also affect the R32? Im still waiting to get proper test drives from my local garage after three weeks, and even then they will only be short ones so its difficult to see how comfortable they really are.

I want a DSG equipped golf with good performance, decent extras, and comfy heated seats. I hope this is going to be possible!
