s2000db
Just a heads up guys, that there's a new DVD available (at a price ) that provides traffic info for the std install sat nav system. http://www.navshop.com/en/product/europe-2008-blaupunkt-travelpilot-ex-en/6379/103/1 It arrived this morning and appears to function correctly... though how effective the rerouting is, is yet to be discovered... ludwig
s2000db, thanks for this alert. I'm trying not to get too excited ..... ! (I’m not kidding) If you have time, please see our posts at http://www.tyresmoke.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1216823/page/0/fpart/all/vc/1 I have a OEM Blaupunkt TravelPilot RNS2 / TravelPilot Ex RNSD factory fitted to my March 2006 Golf GTI So do you know if this DVD would give us the TMC functionality we've been seeking .... ? s2000db
Sure will, check the compatibility tab And also checked out the re-routing last night, it appears to function well, informing you of traffic ahead and telling you that the route has changed (if it's quicker to do so). You'll need fastest route option to take most advantage of this imho.

(It wouldn't make sense to reroute you off a "Shortest" route)
ludwig
s2000db, that's very good of you to do this for us. <And also checked out the re-routing last night, it appears to function well, ....> Excellent news. <You'll need fastest route option to take most advantage of this imho.> Noted. (I do hope that we find out that it is compatible for our GTIs ) BTW just out of curiosity, do you mind telling us (again?)what car/Blaupunkt kit you are using this in? Many thanks, Ludwig
s2000db
Yup, it's an 07 R32 with std fit sat nav MFD DVD, check the specs on the link it's pretty clear imo
ludwig
s2000db, sorry about the misunderstanding “Sure will, check the compatibility tab!” I’ve checked it and it looks clear enough doesn’t it namely, <Volkswagen [RNS MFD DVD in: Caddy, Eos, Golf, …. > I'll be ordering one very soon. BTW just another question if I may, how did you find out about the release of this DVD? I wrote to VW UK in the Summer of last year - they didn't know what I was talking about. They said basically no plans to "retro-fit" TMC capability. I've been trying to find out since then what the problem is Ludwig

Have a chat with their operators, quite friendly, and it turned up next day from Germany via UPS..
ludwig
s2000db, I'm really pleased I asked you this question now. <basically I checked their site after vw ignored my complaints, ..> So really, we have you to thank for getting us to this position, right? I thought <u>I</u> was trying hard to find out why we could not get the TMC functionality. You obviously tried much harder - and got the rewards. If you hadn't posted your "heads up" message, we would be none the wiser. I for one had given up all hope. May I just say, very well done and thank you. ludwig
ChrisAlla, good question. I hope the others such as Froggy, scillyisles and s2000db who know much more than me see this and comment but in the meantime .... The back of my Volkswagen DVD Navigation Digital Road Map Europe (V4) says "For use with RNS MFD DVD" So maybe this is why TeleAtlas call it, RNS MFD DVD (Their website under compatability says “Volkswagen [RNS MFD DVD in: “ Does that make sense? But is their a difference between RNS MFD and RNS MFD2 ? How do we tell exactly what kit we have in our MY 2006 Golf GTIs? Anyway, take a look at this …. http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=104303 Particluarly, “….the service manager said that technical says that none of these systems are capable of being updated, ….” Unbelieveable. Well it is I suppose. Volkswagen UK. Like someone said to Sam Allardyce recently, “You don’t know what you’re doing!” Sorry NUFC fans. ludwig
s200db, I hope that you see this. Just to say that I ordered my DVD on Wed afternoon from TeleAtlas and it arrived via UPS from Germany this morning, Friday. Like you, I'm pleased with that service. Installing it was breeze. As you know, nothing to do except load the DVD. Absolute joy! The INFO screen immediately showed "TMC messages (23)" - and that was just sitting in the car in the garage! Within a minute or so, I had 27 messages, then 32 messages I nearly took to the car out to find some traffic jams "TMC stations" showed "Classic" That's the first time its ever done that of course. Everything seems fine. May I ask you and the others a question? (Let me know if it's on the TeleAtlas site or elsewhere - I don't think it's in our VW "MFD DVD Navigation System" booklet.) When I selected one of the TMC messages ("M1 Leeds, Barnsley traffic congestion ..... )in INFO, it opened to display: M1 Leeds Barnsley traffic congestion, av speed 25 mph MT J43 Leeds M1 J42 M18 Rotherham Goole narrow lanes MJ J6 Thorne MT J7 What does this mean i.e. from MT J43 Leeds .... MT J7 ? MJ and MT? I'll kick myself later for not being able to figure this out .... Thanks, ludwig
s2000db
Ludwig, I haven't a clue what they mean, although it does seem to indicate the direction/carriageway where the hold up lies, and between which junctions.. sorry I can't be more help, might be in the manual though
ludwig
s2000db, ok. Well, at least it's not just me who does not know! <...although it does seem to indicate the direction/carriageway ...> Yes. I see what you mean. I'm trying to get hold of a TravelPilot EX-V User Guide. That may help us. BTW have you noticed that page 34 of our MFD DVD Navigation booklet only gives <u>three</u> "Traffic problem" symbols, warning triangle namely Traffic jam, Slow moving traffic and Road closed. I've already seen two others on my display i.e. slippery road (A66 Scotch Corner to Penrith this morning, Monday, iTIS said ".. snow covering road ... !) and road narrows. I think that there may be more. Ludwig
zharca
Hi, here is a rather bad pic of the symbols (attached) that you can get with TMC. Living around the M25 I think I've seen most of them already! Has anyone else found that with TMC active the maps now take much longer to display and calculating a route is much slower?
ludwig
zharca, thank you very much. Very useful indeed to me. Did you pick these up from some sort of manual/Internet etc. or are they just the ones you have personally encountered? <Living around the M25 I think I've seen most of them already!> Ha-ha! I know what you mean. I lived in Woking for 20 years! <Has anyone else found that with TMC active the maps now take much longer to display and calculating a route is much slower? > I can't say I've noticed. But I've only been using it for 4 days and not have not been on any long runs. I will keep an eye on it and let you know if I notice a difference. ludwig Hi, here is a rather bad pic of the symbols (attached) that you can get with TMC. zharca
Hi, i did a google search and finally found them about 40 pages down. Apparently, the TMC suppliers all get together to set standards (http://www.tmcforum.com) so those are the symbols they've agreed on. What I've found with the load time is that now, when it goes to "route is being calculated", it stops for a while when the progress bar is nearly finished. I guess that's because it's checking the route against the TMC information. The other rather scary thing I've noticed is that the traffic info covers just about everywhere around here. this is good but it must mean that there are cameras everywhere watching our cars

AA and RAC vehicles, Certain supermarket distribution chains and others all have monitors / sensors that can report back average speed and location information that is used. Big brother is already out there!!!
ludwig
zharca, <i did a google search and finally found them about 40 pages down.> Ok, I see. Thanks. I'll have a look using Google soon. <when it goes to "route is being calculated", it stops for a while when the progress bar is nearly finished.> I can't say that I've noticed this yet. But I'll watch out for it. Did you see my post to sb2000 ? on 18 Jan ? I was asking if he knew what "MT" and "MJ" when we look at our TMC messages in INFO Any ideas? Thanks, ludwig
zharca
Hi, I haven't really been checking the messages Ludwig, (as anyone who leaves one on my phone at work will confirm - woops!). I must take a look and see what they say!
