I’ve completely ruined the handling of my GTi.

I've had the F1 Asymmetrics (replaced Conti's) for about 3,000k's now and they are well sorted. Running nitrogen.

We've also had huge downpours in the last month and they feel solid goind thru standing water at speed and in the corners.

3.000K from a set of tyres is preety damn good, I thought I was doing well getting 18K out of mine jump.gif

By the way do you notice any difference with Nitrogen compared to normal air? and where do you blow them up if the need it in the future?

Just a quick hint - tracking? Get it tracked properly i.e. on a VAG Beissbart machine like APS's.

You may have probably had it tracked already. In my experience I got my GTI tracked locally by a recommended tracking place (used many times before), and it just ruined the handling. I got them to check the tracking many times - spot on apparently. I then got the tyres changed, which still didn't help.

In the end all it took was tracking again at APS's - voila once again drives and handles great.

Just my 2p's worth

....Such advice is worth much more than 2p!! grin.gif

Tracking at the time of EVERY tyres change makes a huge difference that you can actually feel. My VW dealer has exactly the same German tracking equipment as APS.

Where can you go to put nitrogen in your tyres? I can only just get fishy smelling air from garage forecourts or my own foot pump.

Had a pair of F1 Asymmetics fitted to the front of the R32 this morning. Still bedding them in but they feel OK, definitely no worse than the worn Dunlops I took off and certainly not like driving on ice.

Only downside is that the tread pattern is not as pretty as the F1 GSD-3s I used to run on my Cupra R, no more nice V patterns in the snow :-)

When I say sorted - I meant bedded down and settled on the car. The Conti's gave me 60,000km's and the new F1's are at 3000km's.

Nitrogen is supplied at all reputable tyre fitters in Jo'burg and every 2 months or so I pop in for a check at any fitter and top up, which is free. The initial conversion to Nitrogen is about 4 quid per tyre.

Hi Jonny

Still not having fun hear. Roads are dry at the moment and it still feels like the road is wet. I've come to the conslusion that, given how much the front wheels spin the rubber will wear out very quickly. I'll then put the rears on eBay (as they will still be knew) and put OEM rubber all round. I reckon I must have a set for a hotter climate that have been made to a different spec. Only conclusion I can come up with.

I've got my GTi Back.....

Replaced those rubbish F1's with a set Conti's and even in the damp I can feel that they are so much better that the F1 Asymertics I had.

I'd got the fronts down to the wear bar (all the spinning) in just 7000 miles - Kwik fit have sale on at the mo and I'm so fed up with the useless handling I went for all 4.

Given what others have said I'm shipping one back to Goodyear to have them explain why it was so rubbish.

I will let you know what they say.

Cleybrooke, like you I have been very disappointed with my F1 Assym's and I am very keen to hear what Goodyear have to say - I was on the verge of going to them myself until I saw that you had recently done so.

Following the rave reviews, I bought 2 when my original front Conti 2's expired after 17K miles. I switched the rear 6mm Conti's to the front and put the new F1's on the back.

My concern is the lack of DRY road grip on undulating (not bumpy) corners where the suspension is loading up and then down again (if you understand what I mean). The rear end feels as though it’s squirming around, the traction light is flickering away and the car is braking the rear wheels to try to keep control.

I had no such issues with the Conti’s and the car now feels dreadful. It can only be down to the change in tyres.

I've done about 1500 miles and, like you, avoided a definitive view until after a good scrub in (they were particularly bad for the 1st 100 miles or so).

So you are not on your own and the Goodyear & E number info (whatever that is) will be warmly welcomed to enable me to decide how pursue this matter myself.

Cheers in anticipation.

Have you checked for an "E" number on the side of the tyres?

I have had no problems at all with my F1s Asymmetrics

OK - done some research here.. It appears that there have been some F1's that came from china and where iffy. These did not have the e in a circle on them. The e defines that they comply with United Nations Regulation No. 30. Each is a different country and the number after it is the specific compliance number for that size tyre. The complete list is below.

1 for Germany, 2 for France, 3 for Italy, 4 for the Netherlands, 5 for Sweden, 6 for Belgium, 7 for Hungary, 8 for the Czech Republic, 9 for Spain, 10 for Serbia, 11 for the United Kingdom, 12 for Austria, 13 for Luxembourg, 14 for Switzerland, 15 (vacant), 16 for Norway, 17 for Finland, 18 for Denmark, 19 for Romania, 20 for Poland, 21 for Portugal, 22 for the Russian Federation, 23 for Greece, 24 for Ireland, 25 for Croatia, 26 for Slovenia, 27 for Slovakia, 28 for Belarus, 29 for Estonia, 30 (vacant), 31 for Bosnia and Herzegovina, 32 for Latvia, 33 (vacant), 34 for Bulgaria, 35 (vacant), 36 for Lithuania, 37 for Turkey, 38 (vacant), 39 for Azerbaijan, 40 for The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, 41 (vacant), 42 for the European Community (Approvals are granted by its Member States using their respective ECE symbol), 43 for Japan, 44 (vacant), 45 for Australia, 46 for Ukraine, 47 for South Africa, 48 for New Zealand, 49 for Cyprus, 50 for Malta, 51 for the Republic of Korea, 52 for Malaysia, 53 for Thailand, 54 and 55 (vacant) and 56 for Montenegro.

Mine have 13 for Luxembourg on. Not sure if this proves anything... Unless of course the duff ones have 13 and the good ones have 11 (for the UK).

If some one that raves about there F1's could check the e number that would be terrific!
