Metalex has hit the nail directly on the head with his fog light description, and I think we can all agree that the headlight LEDs look horrific on virtually anything other than an R8. Audi have devalued them by now fitting them to everything that moves, which inevitably means the boy racers have in turn followed suit. Lexus IS 'jewel' rear lights anyone? Lexus IS 'jewel' rear lights anyone? ....And you have hit the nail on the head by making it perfectly clear that, in your opinion, it's more about the image and a fear or concern of who you may be percieved by your peer group to be associated with, than it is about road safety. In other words, it's all right for Audi R8's but somehow not for other Audis - Why? A judgement of what is good aesthetic style? I have no alternative from your post but to believe that your prime, or rather only, consideration is that you must never do anything to your car which might possibly, even by a very long stretch of imagination, associate you with boy-racers. It takes far more than just a built-in row of Audi-style LED's to be thought of as a boy-racer. Tedious perhaps, but certainly revealing the truth of why some here don't like LED DRL's. Probably not surprising on a car forum full of enthusiasts who each have their very own clear ideas on what one should / shouldn't do to a car. It would be interesting to see a poll on what the general public think of DRL's - ie non - car enthusiasts. Are they perceived to be a gimmick to turn heads or are they perceived to be a good safety feature. I definitely think they make cars more visible. I had a S5 behind me on the M27 yesterday in heavy traffic - there was certainly no forgetting he was there. Thanks, but I don't agree with your view of DRLs on Audi's other than the R8, but then I've just ordered a facelift S3 Sportback, so I might be biased. I've obviously nothing against DRLs or the fitting of DRLs to cars that don't have them as standard, but are you saying you fitted them to your car 100% for safety reasons? I have to say that I think when DRLs become compulsory, I hope car makers follow Audi and BMW's lead by fitting them to the headlamp unit and not low down in place of fog lights or integrated in the fog light unit. They would serve their primary purpose much better by being higher up. ....I think they are an excellent feature whether built-in the headlight or at that level, or at foglight level. The EC ruling is such that my round Hella LED DRL's must not be fitted above a certain height. A lot of bike riders are against dipped headlights being used as DRL's because they are at a similar height to their light and can mask their presence. A Mk5 Golf headlight unit with built-in Audi-style LED strip is available but doesn't install with Xenons (which I have). I investigated the Audi strips but there wasn't any way of fitting without it looking too bodged or changing my vent grills to non-GTI. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
