grdunn123
Just had the nice man from the RAC round and he pulled out 3 fault codes relating to my gearbox problem........anyone shed any light on what they're likely to need fixed? 18155 supply voltage open circuit. short to earth. 17137 switch valve solenoid 1 n88 electrical current circuit sporadic fault 17142 switch valve solonoid n89 electrical fault in current circuit. He cleared the codes and on restarting only the 18155 came on again. Gear lights on the dash illuminated and in limp mode. Car hasn't been used much in a few weeks and battery had gone flat. RAC guy reckoned it may be the battery causing the faults? It's the original battery in my 6 year old 8. Any help would be appreciated
Figure11
If you look here it will give you the p code http://www.bentleypublishers.com/tech/vw/vw.dtc.table.htm I googled that and got this. This is from a Merc forum http://mbworld.org/forums/showpost.php?p=884109&postcount=5 Dunno if it will help, just hope it is just a fuse. I think it has something to do with the Gearbox speed sensor which will be why you are stuck in limp mode. Mike
grdunn123
RAC guy was pretty sure that because the battery had gone flat a couple of times in the last few weeks as I had been working away and had a rental car that this was causing the limp mode. He called a couple of guys who seemed to confirm this. My battery was flat today which is one of the reasons I called them out. Once he ran my car from his van battery it didn't occur again but when he disconnected his and ran the car from it's own battery again it went straight back in to limp mode. This fault has only happened in the last few weeks since the '8 has had little use. Unfortunately have had to book it in to the Stealers tomorrow to get their 'advice'....already been told that pulling the fault codes off will take 1.5 hours at over £100p/h labour??? who are they kidding? I need the car fro the weekend so feel like I'm caught between a rock and an Audi Dealer.
grdunn123
One thing I forgot to ask..........this couldn't be down to a fuse??? read somewhere that there is a TCM fuse? would hate to pay £200 to get a fuse replaced!
grdunn123
Well spent an exciting morning at Teesside Audi, gave them the fault codes from yesterday, they charged me 1.5 hours to read the same codes themselves and diagnosed a new battery........it may not be the real problem but I need a new battery anyway. So tomorrow I will hand over £250 and my gearbox problem may or may not be solved!!

Duffy3074
I just replaced the battery in mine (Go to Vauxhall and buy one of their 105 ah ones for £73 inc extended warranty) after it was getting slow when attempting to start up after an overnight stop, I also had ABS/gearbox/engine warning lights coming on intermittently (Apparently caused by the voltage dropping too much when the car's setting itself up) all of which disappeared after the battery was replaced. grdunn123
More news from Audi! Went to pick up the car at lunchtime and was told that althought the battery was changed, on the test drive on came the gear warning lights again. Further inspection showed that the ecu was flooded as it had been off at some point and hadn't been resealed properly! The guy had dried it all off and was gonna reseat and reseal the thing Monday morning but he already reckoned it was running so much better! No further cost either which is nice!! Impressed with the Dealer on this occasion.
