Last saturday while driving suddenly a "EMISSIONS: WORKSHOP" message appeared, followed by another saying "ENGINE: WORKSHOP!". Now these messages appear every time I start the car, after a minute or so. Also, the panel lights for EPC and Emissions stay after starting the engine. I run a VAG Autoscan and got the next results, hope someone in this forum can decipher what it says! Also... I guess the emissions problem (if it is something with gas emissions) can't be identified with an Autoscan, am I right? cruiser647 Posted June 9, 2008 Report Share Posted June 9, 2008 Your best bet, is to clear the codes completely and then drive the car - see if they come back. Then have a look. You'll need to change the coolant temperature sender too, it causes cold start problems. The incorrect coding is an easy fix and hardly affects you really as I had it for 2 years without noticing! Check here - Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: VW MkIV Info - and scroll down to "17 - Instruments" (where you enter a code based on brakepad wear sensors, 24-hr clock etc) and make sure your code is correct. benjie Posted June 13, 2008 Report Share Posted June 13, 2008 Brake pedal switch is quite easy - give the dealer your VIN (in the windscreen and they'll give you the right one). you have to remove the panel just above and to the right of your pedals and shine a light up there. You should see the other one. Unplug it at the top and twist it and it'll pop out. Reverse the procedure for putting the other one in. The coolant temperature sensor is a bit different - as I remember, you have have wiring going into the back of the sensor whuch you unclip. Then the new one should come with a replacement washer. The sensor itself is just a ling piece of brass colored metal which goes into the coolant. So when you take the old one out, coolant starts to leak... so have some spare to hand as you'll need some whatever happens. How much you need depends on how quickly you can get the old one off, put the new rubber washer and put the new sensor in! I lost about 500ml! As for the location... I'm a diesel obsessive I'm afraid, I have limited knowledge of the petrols! One thing.. do it with a cold engine.. as in, left off overnight... think of what happens to water when it expands and what will happen when you take the old sensor out!
